Ghim Moh is a place less explored by me if not for my other half. We decided to try this stall one morning cos of it’s loud green signage shouting the Teochew out of me… (I’m half Teochew you see…)
Old Teochew is located towards the last second row in the middle of the food centre and they offer only 2 products; Mee Siam and Satay Beehoon. We were in the mood for Mee Siam so we ordered. I’ve tasted very good mee siams in my life, from traditional to modern fusion and this one looks legit. What adds to the anticipation was the aunty’s precision in prepping the order. Looks like an OCD to me haha… There was a short queue so had to wait a little and finally got the mee siam in 10-15mins.
Taste: Love the balance between the tanginess from the assam, the spiciness and also the nuttyness from the sauce. Yes, she adds grounded peanuts into the soup to give it more creaminess and aroma to the sauce. Super appetising, great for mornings!
Service: Self-Service. But they squeeze the lime for us… perfect for those who don’t wanna get their fingers dirty haha
I’ve been frequenting this Sims Drive Market and Food Centre for the longest time, especially before I moved to China and I had a car. To be honest, this food centre is a little troublesome to get to ‘cos there’s only one bus number 64 that reaches there. If take MRT, you’ll have to walk like 800m to get there and perhaps another 800m to walk back. So I was there one day running some errands and I decided to visit my old stalls of Teochew Kuehs and fried carrot cake (search under ‘sims place’on eatwithroy.com)
I was checking out the front rows if there were any new stalls and there I spotted this very familiar duck rice stall. Was greeted by the couple whom I always call Big Brother and Big Sister in teochew. Was totally surprise to see them as I’ve not seen them for ages! They used to be at circular road just beside Kiliiney Kopitiam and have since moved here due to rental hikes. For those who were my colleagues or those who were working at Raffles Place 10-20 years back, you’ll know them. The couple is doing well but traffic there could be better. Like I said before, accessing there is a challenge and youngsters nowadays mostly go for airconditioned places only. Whatever it is, I’m happy I found them, and now I know where to get my Teochew braised duck fix!
Taste: Over 2 decades of culinary perfection, I cannot describe anymore how this wins me over everytime. The sauce is just full of spices and flavour, some may say it’s a little salty but you’re suppose to eat with your rice… If not salty enough, the duck wouldn’t taste good. All I can say this version is the best so far I tried from them.
Service: Brought to table.
Ambience: Hawker Centre, big fans, good natural lighting, lots of pigeons scavenging but will fly if humans nearby.
Price: $5.80. All depends on what you order. They have duck liver and pork belly too. 😉
RTE: Planning in process…
Location: 49 Sims Place #01-04 (Directly opposite block 52). Hours: Daily 8am to 1-2pm, while stocks last.
Few weeks ago I was on my usual Tuesday food trail when I decided to visit the very old North Bridge Road Market & Food Centre. I was there ages ago so I decided to check them out again.
I really took my time to scrutinize on what to eat cos I knew I need to plan my indulgence as I would be eating at a few places. Then I found this interestingly wrong spelling signage stall which I though could be the hidden gem I was looking for. I placed my order of the bigger portion with extra ingredients (greedy me!) and the food came shortly after.
Taste: Nice beefy thick sauce with hints of Chinese herbs used but yet not too overwhelming. Condiments used are pretty authentic. Salted veg, grounded peanuts suggest that they have been around for some time. I was told by Aunty they used to be from Blanco Court… That building must have been torn down some 20 years ago.
Portion: My $6.00 portioning is quite ok. I didn’t ask for extra Kway Teow to be added.
Ambience: Hawker center.
Price: $6.00. Normal bowl size starts from $4.00.
RTE: Yes definitely!
