Top 5 Cafes In Da Nang – Vietnam

Advertisements

Currently transiting in Ho Chih Minh City’s airport so I’m taking the opportunity to write this before I’m back to hectic schedules.

Vietnamese coffees are still pretty much using robusta beans and roasted till very dark with margarine and sugar. Sounds familiar? Yeah a little like Singapore’s Kopitiam coffee but this is pure 100%. No adding of corn or any form of fillers. That’s why the taste is always super bold, coupled with a nice caramelized finish. Arabica coffees are rare as they are usually double the selling price but most of the time, the baristas fail in their extraction. Anyways, holidays are meant to chill, hence I was cool about it. 😉

Anyways, my Top 5 list is base on mainly coffee, ambience and service. May differ from yours so just use this as a guide. You can check out my videos uploaded on my Instagram (@eatwithroy or #roydanang) or FB page.

No. 5 – Gopatel Hotel Coffee House

Ambience: Yes, it’s the cafe at hotel that I was staying in. Yes they have buffet lunch, tea and buffet dinner too. So you can go try if around that area. Not much of ambience but they do have full window seats looking out. Free wifi but slow.

Service: Service is ok.

Coffee: Vietnamese coffee brewed in batch. Served daily at the buffet was just really rich with flavour, really nice even with fresh milk mixed into it.

No. 4 – Rafew Cafe

Ambience: I was debating with the guys if they meant ‘refuel’ or ‘review’ when naming this place. Anyways Rafew is tucked away within the city, walking distance from Gopatel hotel. Very instagrammable ambience, there’s a second storey overlooking the backyard. When I was there, it was very nice and windy. Really chill. Free wifi.

Service: Service was absent after the first order. No one came back to check on us. We had to pay our bill downstairs.

Coffee: No espresso based drinks, no Viet drip coffees. Only those pre-maid and iced coffees. Tiramisu can skip.

Add: 58 Hoàng Văn Thụ, Hải Châu, Đà Nẵng, Vietnam

Tel: +84 90 5773721

No. 3 – Coffee Namu Namu

Ambience: Love the interiors of this place, very modern, has 3 levels and obviously I climbed to the top level. At the rooftop, you can see the Dragon Bridge afar and also the Ferris wheel. Very chill especially when the weather is as chilly now. Free wifi.

Service: Very good and always smiling.

Coffee: Finally some espresso drinks but latte was a little on the weak side. Not cheap though as beans are said to be Italian. Banana bread could be more moist though.

No. 2 – Pho Xua

Ambience: Super rustic and traditional Viet. Felt a little like entering one of the temples in Cambodia. There’s a second storey also.

Service: Not too bad and they stationed one person upstairs.

Coffee: No espresso based drinks, only Vietnamese drips or iced. This is probably one best local beans I’ve tasted so far;  rich, bold, flavourful, brown sugar finish. Good place for food too.

Add: 17 Phan Đình Phùng, Hải Châu 1, Hải Châu, Đà Nẵng, Vietnam

No. 1 – Cong Ca Phe

Ambience: Cong has a very nice rustic olden Vietnamese revolution decor and the name says it all. I totally love this place especially level 2 where you can see the Han River. Staffs are all don with green tshirt uniforms which fits in the whole branding very well. Free wifi. But people smoke inside the enclosed area which is bad for non-smokers.

Service: Pretty attentive and prompt.

Coffee: No espresso based drinks. Coffees are good and very creative. Love their Coconut Coffee Smoothie and iced coffee with fresh milk. Can try the coconut glutinous rice with coffee also.

Day 3 began with me visiting a couple of places before heading up to Doi Chang Mountain. I just love not just checking out unique coffee houses but also less known street food! I will let the pics do the talking!

At Chivit Thammada. I’ve written a separate blogpost about this place before as it gave me some much inspirations. Love this place like mad!
So cosy inside
Counter
Superb surroundings
Riverside seating

My order of Scrambled Eggs Muffin with Smoked Salmon. Yummy!
Love the cutlery too!
Back in town, parked my car, on my way to 7-Eleven to top up my SIM Card data when I spotted this eatery.
Which was selling this awesome roast pork!!! Just by the look of the skin, I know this is CRACKLING! So guess what happened next? ;P
Yeah I ordered a plate of roast pork rice but I asked for lesser rice. It’s very well roasted BUT they chopped in really small pieces. 40 baht!
Pump petrol before the long journey up the mountains!
But first, stop by Wat Rong Khun aka White Temple. Seriously too touristy for me. So I took a selfie anyways! ;P
All white…
But check out the construction, really detailed.
This is actually a road divider cone at the White Temple. I don’t understand why they used 4-faced skull… Hmmm…
On my way up Doi Chang
Pano shot of the view halfway up. Very nice lake.
Selfie!
Almost reaching
Found a roadside eatery where I decided to have my lunch.
OMG check out the view. Very serene surrounding.
Lady didn’t speak English, so I used my limited Thai to order a fried rice. Thais somehow do damn good fried rice!
Ordered this bittergourd veg also but DAMN SALTY… If not also very nice. Maybe see me excited then put too much salt hahaha…
Decided to explore Doi Chang town a little
Lady selling water
In town
Houses built on slopes
Chinese school
Doi Chang Coffee Farm’s milling facility

A cappuccino first!
Kopi Luwak… straight from the arse.

The bad cherries are filtered out for instant coffees and your 3-in-1s.
Good cherries gets pumped up for pulping process.
The hulling machine. Removes the parchment off the beans
Sorting in progrees into different grades and types
Colour sorter. Laser recognition to remove the off coloured beans which the bean sorter cannot detect.
Packing in progress
Manual sorting which is why Doi Chang beans are highly graded.
Coffee cherries plucking is tough!
Coffee cherry
After eating the cherry, the coffee beans remain
Drying courtyard
Beans….
Pool of beans
Storage
Selfie!
Akha Tribe. The original founding family of Doi Chang.
The original founder of Doi Chang beans. Not to be confused with the popular Doi Chaang chain all over Thailand, UK and now in Malaysia and Singapore. This uncle is the elder brother of the other one.
View of Myanmar. That’s why this family decided to settle at Doi Chang because they can see their homeland at a distance.
Sunsetting
Hardworking!
Time for the farmers to come and deposit their harvest of the day!
Weighing and recording of every farmer that is registered under the coffee farm so that it’s truly Single Origin.
Deposits went on till around 7pm+. Cherries are soaked overnight to be fermented for next day processing.
Dinner time!
Spicy like hell but I like!
My room for the night.
Simple toilet but damn cold at night.

Alright that’s all for day 3, watch out for Day 4!

Foodtrail In Chiangrai Day 2 – Chiangrai, Thailand

Advertisements

Began day 2 in Chiangrai pretty early by catching the sunrise at the rooftop of the hotel. Buildings in Chiangrai are not tall, maybe because of regulations on building heights. Anyways it was a pretty long day so be prepared to scroll down like mad. More of what I see, food wise was limited ‘cos I had very full brekkie at the hotel which lasted the whole day. Anyways, check out below:

Sunrise, what a nice cool morning at 14 degrees

Simple brekkie buffet, I’m ok with it actually.

Wow double yolk egg. How lucky!

Love it cos they have loads of veg for the brekkie

Fish porridge

Don’;t forget to eat your fruits!

Trying this for the first time. Ok lor, black sesame with soy bean. Not too bad.

Something you wanna be equipped with when on self-drive mode. An USB car adaptor! Just in case your car doesn’t already have one.

And a lot of snacks, water and tissue paper!

How the roads look like in Chiangrai. This is heading towards the Golden Triangle.

Found a quaint cafe which caught my eye along the highway.

Simple set up which to me is sufficient for business.

Oooooo ice cream cakes!

Yummy yummy!

My morning coffee fix!

Arrived at House of Opium

All these are for sale… I don’t have access to opium so didn’t buy hahaha

Temple uphill entrance

Arrived at the Golden Triangle

Pano shot of the Golden Triangle. As you can see, the water is very choppy and that’s about it.

🙂

Yeah I did many selfies here hahaha

One huge buddha here.

Boat structure not functional

See how narrow the boat at the bottom? That’s the transport to head over to Laos for some casino action.

Continued my journey northwards to Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort

Arrived and check out the flower arrangements on the floor

Wow no wonder 6 star hotel

My view at the coffee house

Very expensive per night stay here

Coffee house

Yes I was here to try this

Price for the coffee

Here it is, the much talk about coffee

Tried once, enough. Nothing special. No body, just like drinking tea.

Love the resort

Wonder if this is heading to the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation. But no access so headed off.

Scenery on my way back

Stopped by the roadside for some honey pineapples. Very very sweet and really delicious! I’m referring to the fruits lah. ;P

Yummy!

Spotted a cute resort opposite the road, made a u-turn and check it out

Cute

Simple resort

The top part has no purpose

Hey cutie!

Coffee house

Babe spotted

Nice chill place

Latte came… extraction could be better but it’s alright.

Bananas are free to eat.

Lady boss brought me around to view the resort

Simple rooms lah, cheap at 600 baht per night.

Lady boss decided to give me a tour around the vicinity of the resort by driving around in her pickup

Mae Fa Luang University

Interestingly I thought this is a temple but it’s actually the school’s Chinese culture society.

Wah got nice landscaping

This land will be cleared for some big hospitals

Some damn nice hilly resort

Protected area so cannot go in take pics

Even the roads they constructed all the way into their resort

Left the lady boss and drove on my own to check out this orphanage I found.

Ok looks good and very well organised

Nice landscaping inside also.

Alright head back to city for dinner!

Much needed Iced Thai Milk Tea

Phad Thai

Fried chicken was ok but I love the sausages,

Favourite mango glutinous rice. Mango was sourish sweet though.

After dinner walk to check out other shops. This one sells loads of sausages. This is where I tapao my Thai sausages!

At snack shop. Crispy worms anyone?

At Yoddoi Coffee. Best view to watch the Clock Tower

See my view… and it’s cool air 😉

Cappuccino is much to be desired.

Proceeded to Central Plaza. The only shopping mall which is pretty much what we have in SG.

Biggest mall in Chiangrai.

Foodcourt!

Got multiplex

Paus

This vegetarian takeaway is damn good.

Check out the colours from the glutinous rice!

At the supermarket and checking out the Thai bentos. I love bentos!

Wah lau so tempted… but didn’t buy lah.
So that ended my Day 2. Feel so tired just writing this post! Ok stay tuned for Day 3!

Foodtrail In Chiangrai Day 1 – Chiangrai, Thailand

Advertisements

Alright this is a very late post but at least the stalls are still there last check. Chiangrai is a very nice place if you haven’t been. Less crowded as compared to Bangkok and the weather’s cooler especially towards the year end. This blogpost may be quite long due to so many things to write about. So maybe I should just stick to the food? Ok maybe food with some attractions that I reckon you should know lah. Anyways, you will be seeing a lot of food pics and please read the captions below them, and yes I ate most of them. So don’t judge ok? ;P

Lunch place during transit at Don Mueng Airport, Bangkok.
My lunch at Don Mueng Airport while transiting. Can’t remember the name of the place but it’s on the left side bside Taurus Coffee Bar. Not bad, not expensive.
Taurus Coffee Bar beside the Japanese eatery
Some cake that looks good but was just too sweet at Taurus Coffee Bar
Latte was really bad from Taurus Coffee Bar
Finally arrive Chiangrai airport!
Collected my car which will accompany me for the next 5 days.
The hotel
My room
Simple lah, cheap also at S$40 per night.
Can see my car from the balcony. Nice.
Sunset!
Checked out the room service menu. The description puts me in doubt… So off I go outside exploring!
Found this roadside stall on the road that leads to the Clock Tower. Locals eat here so I parked my car and try.
Looks like a mess but heck with hygiene, this could be damn good.
Inside sitting.
Someone’s chicken noodles. So I snap!
Put this and you’ll need a lot of ice water.
35 Baht. A big bowl of porky madness
Not the glass noodles I like but this kway teow was alright. Love the broth and a must-eat whenever I’m in Chiangrai!
Roadside eating is very common in Chiangrai. If you’re not prepared for street food, then you may not be able to try what’s local.
This shop sells pau. I didn’t try because pau will take up my stomach space although I have a lot of HDD. ;P
Heard this stall is very popular due to the youtiao and pandan custards.
Most youtiao in Thailand are short cute ones, this one is what we normally have but at only 15 baht.
At first I thought is kaya but I was in for some surprise
Wah lau, this is some damn good Pandan Kaya custard lahhhhh
Think everyone knows what this is. Khao Naew Mamuang (glutinous rice with mango) Something I cannot resist.
Totally in love with this pink VW!
Just sit anywhere and enjoy your coffee and desserts
They are selling some toast with a lot of condense milk. Very local which I avoided cos of sugar.
Yoohoo!
Not a very good machine but it works for them and no one’s complaining, So we are all happy!
My order of kafei yen (Thai ice coffee).
The Clock Tower. See tourists gather at the road divider to take pictures. There is light display at every hour from 7pm. One prime attraction in Chiangrai.
Packed this Khao Mun Gai for only 35 Baht. It is really tasty and fragrant!

So that’s all for day 1. Stay tuned for Day 2!

Chiang Rai Day 1

Advertisements

Yes I’m traveling again. This time to a place where I’ve never been before; Chiang Rai(CR). Just Dec, I was in Chiang Mai and the place has so much good food that I realize I should check out its northern neighbor.

Took Air Asia (AA) to BKK Don Meung airport and the flight was like only half full. Could be the mess the whole place is going through right now… But I’m not complaining, I don’t like full flights. Landed in BKK and had to check out of the airport (not connecting and booked separately) and checked in again later for my flight to CR. While waiting for my checking in I had a quick lunch at Saboten to the far left of the airport (if you face the airport).

The meat is pork tenderloin and pretty nice and juicy. Curry tasted just right, Japanese style.

The flight I took to CR was full… Quite fortunate the seat beside me was empty, hence I can open my legs wider haha… Met a guy beside me who apparently is a drummer and was heading to the Golden Triangle for a performance! And he brought his own cajon up the plane, love cajons man but can’t play haha… ;P We exchanged numbers and headed our separate ways, prolly hook up when I head to the Golden Triangle later.

Arrived at CR airport then headed to Hertz where I rented a small car.

The rental costed me around THB$4000 for 5 days (to us is 4 nights but in Thailand they count as 5 days). Nevertheless it’s affordable and will be my transport to everywhere in CR! See my lovely less than a year old Toyota Vios!

While getting ready to hit the roads, I realize my GPS don’t work at all and outdated. Hence I headed to the city, base on the map in my mind (mind mapping??) when I was researching on CR. When hit town, it was chaotic, so no choice I had to use my data on my SG SIM card. The trick is, you can use to access to your google maps first, set the navigation and then turn off your data to save money. Somehow the navigation still works but would be better to get a local SIM card with unlimited data usage… Which I did along the way. I bought an AIS card for THB59 but have to top up credits at any 7-11 stores (they call it 7 here). If you’re not calling a lot, just top up THB50 first.

Roads can be quite jammy during peak hours and unfortunately I was caught in it. When in such jams, just go with the flow, don’t do any stunts, cos you dunno the culture here… Which applies to me as well ;P

Finding the hotel is a challenge. I booked M Residence because of it’s very nicely designed interiors and good rates. You need to be good in navigation to get here cos have to turn in small roads. Better still you have someone beside you to do that. I had to navi and drive in the madness, hence quite stress! Below are some pics of the hotel but I’ll be writing on it on sleepwithroy.wordpress.com.

After shower and some planning, I headed out for dinner at the night market. The night market here is not crowded… Not as mad as Chiang Mai and Pai.

There’s another part of town around the clock tower (about 500m) from here where it’s more bustling. But I smelt something in the air, an aromatic scent of an awesome broth… So like a dog I sniff and track the source and I found it!

Very roadside but looks good and I love eating with the locals. So I told the lady I wanted a bowl of whatever she’s selling haha and chose pork cos it looked fresher.

This bowl of goodness is really what I needed as I was really hungry and my last meal was since lunch. The broth was so awesome, it goes very well with the kway teow (flat noodles). I tried the chicken rice (Khao Mun Gai) as well, equally awesome!

The rice is a lot more fragrant that any other places I’ve tried in Thailand. Although it’s a Singaporean dish, it’s pretty good in Thai standards! Noodles and rice each THB35 only! Portions are good too! Will definitely return to eat (RTE) if I have time to swing by!

Took a drive to the clock tower after that, below are pics of what I saw and all the food stalls that I found interesting! I didn’t try most of them as I am full and had to moderate my eating! >_<

Ok you must wondering what’s that greenish gooey thingy right? Well it’s Pandan Pudding. Damn blardy good and not so sweet! If only I can bring it back to my friends in SG, it’s really awesome!

Alright this is for Day 1, will be heading out tomorrow to The Golden Triangle and see if there’re any good food around there and may head to the mountains in Mae Fa Luang… If I can find the place! ;P

Here are some tips for friends traveling to Thailand.

1. Travel light – I booked no check in luggage here but return I booked a 20kgs luggage space to save money. Coming back you’ll definitely buy a lot of stuffs, for me it’s coffee beans and samples I’ll be bringing back.

2. Bring only clothes and undies. You can get everything here in Thailand as they are manufacturers for P&G, Colgate and Unilever. You can also buy clothes here so… This will help to boast their economy.

3. Change money when you reach CR. The rates are better than BKK and SG airports.

4. Book your car rentals in advance as they may run out of cars during peak seasons.

5. Eat at local stalls where you can see there’s some level of hygiene. If you’re stomach trained like me, then just whack! The best foods are at these places!
