I first came to know Denise through Instagram and she told me about her plans to set up a Prawn Noodle stall and some more a halal one! I thought the idea was interesting and told her I’ll definitely be there when she opens.

So today is the day she started her dream. And as promised, I was there to lend her my support. See my reviews below and please support young hawkerprenuers and support local!

Ambience: Hawker centre.

Hong Shan Soon Kueh – Toa Payoh, Singapore

Was here to try the famous Lai Heng Mushroom Minced Meat Mee and I noticed the workers and boss at this stall at the corner were busy churning out trays and trays of kueh for steaming! Then the OMG moment came… the soon kueh is the real SOONG! (That’s how Teochews pronounce bamboo shoot) Soon Kueh dates back a long way to the Chaozhou and Shantou cities of the Guangdong Province! It’s definitely my first encounter with something so traditional here and I am so damn happy about it!

The owner told me he has been doing this since he was a young man… easily more than 30 years already! A classic SG Legendary!

Da Stall
All handmade on the spot
Ready to steam ah!
Steamed Gu Chye Kueh!
Steamed Peng Kueh!
My orders

Ordered the Soon Kueh, Gu Chye Kueh and Peng Kueh. Soon Kueh wins me over immediately cos of the filling of course, the skin texture together with the Gu Chye Kueh, is lightly chewy and soft. Damn good! Gu Chye Kueh fillings on the other hand was a little fibrous for me. Still like the soft soft type. But tasty though. Peng Kueh was nice and soft, prefer it to have a little more dried shrimps and mushroom inside. If not like a bit plain.

$1.30 for Soon Kueh and Peng Kueh. $1.10 for Gu Chye Kueh.

回味之家 The Home Restaurant – Toa Payoh, Singapore

Another little gem which I’ve discovered recently when I was in Toa Payoh to get some consultation on my new HDB flat application. I was walking towards Tim Ho Wan for a quick snack before I head on to my other foodtrail destination when I came across this little not more than 300sft shop at the ground floor of Hersing Centre. I walked passed it as it was very crowded during lunch time, and headed up for some dim sums. After my dim sums, I was heading down to check  them out again and there was a seat. So I decided to give them a try.

回味之家 or The Home Restaurant was set up just in April 2016 by 2 partners who are former flight attendants. Driven by passion and his Ah Ma’s recipes, Jordan, the Chef partner, decided to start this little place to share these great home cook dishes with all of us.

Check out the pics below and are non-paid features:

Simple menu but enough for a good meal
Set lunches! Very value for money! Only for weekdays! But their ala carte dishes are not that ex too! Best to bring family for dinner!
This is for $8!
Stir Fried White Noodle. Love the clam broth used and together with the fried eggs, a lovely combination! Please note this is not Xing Hua noodle. It’s a category on its own.
Best eaten with cut red chillies!
Clams are fresh!
Fried Chicken Chunks! My side dish part of the set!
Interesting Lime Juice with dried orange peels.
Grandma Porridge… is actually kiam muay. May be a little salty for the older folks but its damn flavourful lah! Where else in SG selling this?!??
With the 2 partners

Rating: 4.75/5. If they have direct fire stoves would be a full 5 from me.

Taste: Very homely. Taste really good as well. Can’t wait to try the rest of the items!

Portion: Average.

Service: Confirm good lah, they handle the toughest customers 35000ft in the air.

Ambience: Small and can be crampy for a big guy like me. 😁

Price: $8 per lunch set!

RTE: Yes!
