泉 QUAN NASI LEMAK ECONOMICAL BEEHOON – JALAN BATU, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

I dare you to ask for extra beehoon or mee and finish it alone in one sitting at this stall. For beehoon mee lovers like myself will love it. After writing about their kway chap neighbour in my previous post, this stall is a stall I can’t miss. Food wise not the best but good enough for me if I’m looking for a beehoon mee fix.

Stall Front
Not much stuff left cos it was 11am…
This weighed over half a kg and I believe it’s only $2+
Smaller packet but big enough portion for normal adult. $1+ only.

What I like about this stall is that the portions are HUGE!!! Just how huge you may ask… Let’s say if you tapao, the measurements would roughly be 20cm x 20cm x 10cm(H)! And on top of that, they are probably one of the cheapest around! The uncle in front of me bought beehoon with chicken wing and half a fishcake was only $1.70! Yes they can have half a ngoh hiang or chicken cutlet also. But cannot half egg lah, later aunty half you then you know 😜. Quan is definitely a hidden gem and one that helps the community by providing affordable food! Well done!

FENG JI KWAY CHAP – JALAN BATU, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

Feng Ji Kway Chap was discovered some years back when I was there at Jalan Batu Hawker Centre in search for my fav wanton noodles. But there was a long queue so I gave Feng Ji a try.

What I like about this stall is the friendly tattooed owner welding a chopper and his no nonsense lady partner who is there taking orders. The kway is exceptionally smooth and silky because he’s using the ultra thin one which is quite challenging as the cooking style is different and it breaks or becomes soggy easily. But his was perfect. And the innards have no porky smell, which appeals to even my fussy Diana. Paired with the vinegar based chilli sauce, yums. Best of all, the price at only $4.50 per standard set. Prolly one of the cheapest around.

BOH GEH UNCLE CANTEEN – SELETAR, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

A popular place for those working around that Seletar area, cab and Grab Drivers and apparently also to those who are doing their round island cycling. A really run down canteen with a kampong feel and only 3 stalls; Malay, Chinese and drinks. The Malay stall sells Nasi Lemak, Nasi Padang, Mee Siam, etc, dishes while the Chinese one is your usual Economical Rice stall. The drinks stall is managed by the owner himself with 2 lady generals making sure no one snaps photos of the premises and the food you paid for, which I thought was rather weird cos the other 2 stalls definitely need more publicity. Well, uncle must have his reasons lah.

What I like about this place is that the prices remain the same like in the 80s… Just like the ambience of this canteen, time came to a standstill. Don’t expect very nice hawker food here but they are very affordable which I feel is what keeping the lower income workers going.

HOKKIEN FRIED PRAWN NOODLE – BEDOK, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

Tried many Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodles in Singapore and this is definitely one of the best in my humble opinion. Tried a couple of times to be sure so far never failed my cravings.

What I like about this stall is that the broth was really on point. Rich and umami-filled. Plus the generous use of eggs, fry till fragrant then add stock in to simmer to a rich milky base. Yums when the noodles are soaked into it! Not forgetting the seasoned crispy lard and the super spicy chilli sauce. All blend very well with the noodles.

鑫鑫 Xin Xin Claypot Rice – Hougang, Singapore

Advertisements

I reckon I’m reviewing too much on Hougang foods but no pian leh, recently around this area a lot and Hougang is where I grew up in. Came to know Xin Xin from a network of F&B bosses and went there support. Founded by 2 graduates who decided to try hawker business and started this traditional food line in 2018.

What I like about this stall is that the 2 young gentlemen gave up their comfortable office jobs to do something which most graduates wouldn’t even consider a bit. At the same time, using charcoal to cook the rice will definitely taste better, not forgetting it’s time consuming and thrice the price of gas. We should encourage such Young Hawkerprenuerships so that our generations below us will get to taste authentic traditional foods like this charcoal claypot rice.

海霞板面 Handmade Noodle – Hougang, Singapore

Advertisements

Individual stalls like these are either  recommended by someone or discovered by yourself. I was checking out another stall but to my disappointment, so I was fortunate that I came across this stall and the rojak stall which I will blog separately.

What I like about this stall is the lady boss who is very cheerful and obviously hard working cos she’s there as early as 5am to prep the stall to start selling at 6am. Even heard those who have moved away to Jurong come back just to eat her ban mian.

And what I like about this Mee Hoon Kueh is that the dough is super yellowish eggy and I believe she kneaded it till smooth and left to proof before using it for cooking. As a result, the kueh is extra fluffy and soft to every bite, which is a totally different gastronomical experience from your usual white plain flour mee hoon kueh. On the other hand, the Red Wine Chicken Mee Sua was also yummy, with appropriate wine strength in the broth which feels darn good while drinking it hot. I reheated my tapao soups but if you can, have it there will be nicer. They also have the ‘Fried Ban Mian’ which is literally just the dry version. Can skip.

85 FRIED OYSTER乡村古早蚝煎 – BEDOK, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

Tried this the first time when Diana tapao on one of the nights when it we didn’t know what to eat so we headed down to 85 Market after closing the cafe for the day. The other time was fried by a younger chap. This time round caught on video is the owner himself, Mr Goh. Prior to this vlog we didn’t know that Mr. Goh is illiterate hence Whatsapp or digital online platforms are challenging for him. In addition, his stall is overshawdowed by the 2 stalls on the front row. So hopefully this vlog can help drive him some traffic admist this pandemic… And perhaps more reviews on Google Maps as well.

When we had this Fried Oyster the first time, the taste brought me back to my childhood days where Fried Oyster was not affordable, and I thank my parents and Nanny for doting on me by letting me try many types of foods. Hence, expanded my taste profiling since I was young. This was our second time having it, the taste was equally good. Shows that the second generation has been taught well and I’m really happy for Mr Goh. Tried the Wu Xiang Xia Bing also, it was good but the beehoon had an unique taste which we were guessing was five spice powder. Other than that the ingredients were nicely executed. Ultimately in our opinion, this Fried Oyster is prolly one of the best around in Singapore, together with another stall, Teck’s Oyster, located at East Coast Lagoon Food Centre. So go support this legendary hawker since 1967 ya and keep the tradition alive!
