幸运板面鱼汤 – HOUGANG, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

Have been coming to this coffeeshop for the famous Fried Oyster and Char Kway Teow ever since they moved from the old wet market area at Hougang Ave 3. Haven’t really tried this Ban Mian stall so I decided to give the Ma La Ban Mian and fried gyoza a try. As you can see, she has a lot of variety so good luck making your choice for your meal!

What I like about this stall is that the lady manages it all by herself. From prepping, cooking, deep frying, taking orders, packing food, collect money, etc. I believe she was from China but has been here in SG very long already. Very friendly and accommodating.

Go check it out and let me know if you like this place too by commenting below! Please remember to subscribe and like my YouTube channel, IG and FB (@eatwithroy) page that I can reach out more to help the hawkers and small business community for FREE! Stay tuned for my next yummy video! 😋

Hong Shan Soon Kueh – Toa Payoh, Singapore

Advertisements

Intro:
Was here to try the famous Lai Heng Mushroom Minced Meat Mee and I noticed the workers and boss at this stall at the corner were busy churning out trays and trays of kueh for steaming! Then the OMG moment came… the soon kueh is the real SOONG! (That’s how Teochews pronounce bamboo shoot) Soon Kueh dates back a long way to the Chaozhou and Shantou cities of the Guangdong Province! It’s definitely my first encounter with something so traditional here and I am so damn happy about it!

The owner told me he has been doing this since he was a young man… easily more than 30 years already! A classic SG Legendary!

All handmade on the spot
Ready to steam ah!
Steamed Gu Chye Kueh!
Steamed Peng Kueh!
My orders

Taste:
Ordered the Soon Kueh, Gu Chye Kueh and Peng Kueh. Soon Kueh wins me over immediately cos of the filling of course, the skin texture together with the Gu Chye Kueh, is lightly chewy and soft. Damn good! Gu Chye Kueh fillings on the other hand was a little fibrous for me. Still like the soft soft type. But tasty though. Peng Kueh was nice and soft, prefer it to have a little more dried shrimps and mushroom inside. If not like a bit plain.

$1.30 for Soon Kueh and Peng Kueh. $1.10 for Gu Chye Kueh.

ROY THAI KITCHEN – HOUGANG, SINGAPORE (CLOSED)

Advertisements

Intro:This is definitely a hidden gem which I came to know recently. Roy Thai Kitchen (no, I don’t have any invested interest in this if you’re wondering!) is nestled within a coffeeshop where the famous roast meat joint Guan Chee is. Although competition is strong, the boss of RTK (Which literally means Authentic Thai Kitchen) Admond, is determined to set a foothold in there to start providing affordable authentic Thai food to the neighbourhood. Even the Head Chef, Lob and second chef are from Thailand! Check out my reviews below:

Humble little stall in a coffee shop!

Damn yummy pepper prawn crackers! The sambal even more bombastic! These crackers are complimentary for a la carte orders only.

Oh when I sipped this Tom Yum Seafood soup ($8/$12), I know Mum will like this. Very nice and yummy.

Sliced Pork Salad ($8) Love the spicy and tangy taste.

Green Curry Chicken ($8) for a very good portion and the flavours are quite close to what I had in Northern Thailand. Love this dish a lot. Go with white steamed rice best! Alternatively, you can order their Green Curry Fried Rice ($5) too!

Thai Style Steamed Fish with Lime Juice ($22). Priced very reasonably and taste really appetising and homely. A must order!

Pad Thai ($5) doesn’t come with any meat cos originally is like that. Best of all, final details like little dried shrimps are added which authenticates how Thais love it. Another must order!

Me, Chef Lob, Admond & Wife!

Taste:

Generally, all the dishes we had were very tasty! Really good! Only set back was the Sliced Pork Salad, which was a little tough for my liking. But the team will be working on this and hopefully we’ll have yummy tender pork on our next visit! Keep up the good work guys!

545 WHAMPOA PRAWN NOODLES – BUFFALO ROAD, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

Intro:

You know Whampoa is a place where many Legendary Hawkers come from. There’s Whampoa Keng Fish Head Steamboat, Rojak, Fried Hokkien Mee, and this 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles. The original stall still operates at the Whampoa market by the Aunties while 3rd generation daughter Ruifang, operates at Tekka Market & Food Centre. Ruifang left the corporate world in 2013 to continue this 60 year old legacy by her grandfather. She is one of the few young hawkers who believes in keeping the tradition and legacy alive so that our kids and grandchildren know what we enjoyed during our times. I am extremely proud of these young hawkers and respect what they are going through.

Taste:

There’s only Kway Teow, Mee and Beehoon. So I usually order Beehoon + Mee dry. Dry so that I can taste the lovely legendary homemade sambal chilli and the blend of flavours coupled with freshly fried pork lard and shallots. My verdict is the noodles were really yummy and ingredients were generous even for portions of $3. The broth was bursting with flavours, flavours of umami sweetness from so many prawns cooked in it.

SG PRAWN NOODLES – HAIG ROAD, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

Intro:

I reckon naming the stall is pretty important especially for first timers trying out the food. I’ve been seeing this SG Prawn noodle place for the longest time near my cafe and decided to try this time round. So is it a hit or miss? See my comments below.

Taste:

One sip of the broth sends umami vibes down my throat and its something not attainable by MSG and just prawn shells. Broth is the result of a lot of pork bones and prawn shells boiled over hours and maybe even days to get the taste. Pork ribs were tender too!

Price:

$4.50 for pork ribs and prawn noodles.

GOLDHILL FAMILY RESTAURANT (金華美食店) – HOUGANG, SINGAPORE

See the queue…
Getting there…
This is what’s left at 7pm
Wing, Otak and veg, $2.
Sesame oil chicken, veg and egg, $2

Intro:

My mum has been frequenting this place for the longest time cos she always tapao for me. So because I have a car now, I managed to check out this place finally and witness the amazing queue at this pure hidden gem eatery.

Taste:

They basically only sell economical rice but the fried chicken wings are their specialty. Each only at $1. I would prefer to have more curry on the rice so maybe you can ask for more curry sauce. Dishes are pretty tasty overall. Opens for lunch and dinner. Usually not much dishes left after 7pm.

Price:

Rice with 1 meat and 2 veg/sides only for $2. Yes, 2 freaking dollars!!!

Portion:

Average.

Service:

Self-service for dine in or takeaway. Must order fast cos queue behind quite pressurising!

Waiting Time:

10-20mins depend on the time and type of queue. Lunch time you’ll get construction workers coming to pack like 10-20 packs!!! So you might wait for half an hour. So good luck!

SIN CHIE TOKE HUAN HAINANESE CURRY RICE – UPPER SERANGOON, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

Intro:

This is an outlet within my hood which I hardly visit nowadays. But since I was bringing Ron around and we found a lot (so lucky right!), then might as well pop in to check it out. Besides the curry rice, they also have a stall selling pork porridge and another selling simple desserts. See my review below.

Taste:

Curry Rice – You cannot fault the dishes as they are prepared freshly daily. Love the flavours of the light curry sauce on the rice but I wished they poured more.

Pork Porridge – Tried the Pork Porridge too, smooth, light and the ingredients were fresh. The pork inside was very tender!

Cheng Tng – Probably one of the best I’ve tasted. It has the traditional Cantonese ‘Tong Tsui’ (糖水) taste and aroma. Best with ice! I’ll go back for this specially!

Price:

My plate of goodness was like $4.70. Very affordable and cheaper than most kali png places. Pork Porridge was $3 and Cheng Tng was $2.20 ($0.20 for packaging)

Portion:

Average.

Service:

Self-service for curry rice. Service by pork porridge was ok. Dessert stall service was very good.

10-20mins depend on the time.
