Pasar Malam (Night Market) @ Ipoh, Malaysia

Advertisements

What better way to end my Ipoh food spree with a write up on the night market or Pasar Malam of Ipoh. There are 2 different night markets… one is a lot bigger scale and caters more to the general public and it is at different location daily. The other one will be near Lou Wong Bean Sprout Chicken, permanently there and cater more for our muslim friends. So obviously I went to the former lah, and if I’m not wrong, they are always at Tesco area on Wednesday nights. Just ask around from the locals, they know which day is at where. 🙂

Entrance...
Lok Lok... cook in the hot water, spread some sauce, and whack... After that they count how many sticks you ate...
Only one bean curd stall and it's very good... Their bean curd all comes with ginger inside.
smooth and nice
RM$2 deep fried chempedak
Many stalls selling tako balls and taiwanese crispy chicken cutlet
Keropok stall with free tasting!! The fish one has loads of fish bits inside. They close quite early cos sell very fast so maybe you wanna be there before 8.30pm.
Paper wrapped chicken! This one is nice.
Siew mai is also very nice. Skip fishball. Big pau is ok.
Taiwnese Crispy Chicken Cutlet... many stalls... taste ok only.
Apom RM$1 for 3 pieces... last time was 4 pieces...
One guy cook, another old man roll with his bare hands... and collect money from the same hands... but still whack lah... don't care!
Asam Laksa has a few stalls... not too bad though.
Fried Carrot Cake look for this guy... he uses a lot of egg and bean sprouts. RM$2.50 only.
Deep fried crabs... never try but looks good...
Mini burgers in bite size like oreos. RM$2.50 I think. Interesting and nice.
Yes they sell these fresh water lobsters for your fish tank and fighting fish and also some other fish too
Yeah hamsters as well...

小肥羊 @ Shenzhen, China

This is one of the many chains of steamboat in China which is very popular but affordable at the same time. Tried it sometime late last year and it was really good. Didn’t snap pics of simple stuff like potatoes and radishes. Think you can figure it out. ;P Check it out.

Very nice ambience inside although the surrounding outside is an industrial area.
Thermo stove
Ordered clear broth but it will come with loads of condiments inside... the broth is excellent!
They are famous for their lamb...
And beef as well...
Di Wang Veg... very nice crisp and great for steamboats.
Other veg and fungus
Mongolian Pan Cakes
With mutton fillings
Lamb skewers... can skip... not very nice
Golden Big Biscuit... Looks plain but surprisingly very nice!

Red Mango @ Wilkie Edge

Advertisements

When you hear Red Mango, you must be thinking it’s either a fruit or dessert store right? This one has both. That’s right, this Korean food chain, made popular in the US is now in 5 locations in Singapore. I happened to chance upon it while I was at Wilkie Edge for dinner one of the Saturdays and my friends were like highly recommending it to me. So after dinner, we strutted to the open concept shop and ordered our favourite flavours… hmmm… favourite flavours… what a tongue twister… can you say it very fast 5 times? Ok I’m joking… here are the pics… ;P

The shop
My order of the original flavour yoghurt with granola topping. Super yummy!
Friend’s order of strawberry and original twist.
Complimentary waffles for us to try. Icing sugar on top but best eat with a scoop of yoghurt, place it on top of waffle and put the whole thing in your mouth… AWESOME!!!

Tse Char Stall @ 112 Bishan St 12

Advertisements

Ok finally broadband is stable… a lot of backlogs for the food that I’m suppose to review. This one is yet again at block 112 Bishan St 12. Tried the other stuff already so must try the Tse Char stall cos I noticed quite a lot of people eating. So I order a classic Sweet & Sour Pork Rice to taste how good this basic dish can be.

The pork has a very nice crispy crust around it and the pork is tender inside. Not too sweet, and very nice fire burnt taste. Nice.
Their sambal chilli is very nice... remember to ask for more.. hehe...

Rating: 4/5

Taste: It was better than expected. Such good sweet and sour pork is quite hard to come by especially when it’s crispy outside, tender inside and the taste is just right.

Portion: Average

Price: $4.50. Not as cheap like some other places but the quality is worth it.

RTE: Yeah sure!

Location: 112 Bishan St 12 coffee shop

Thai Food Restaurant (301 Ubi Ave 1 #01-273) (Moved – See new address)

Advertisements

Ok this is not my first time eating here. Many times already. Reason is that it’s really good and affordable. So I’ve arranged to meet up with 2 girl-friends to introduce how good the food is.

The shop owners are an old couple who hired a Thai cook from Bangkok (His name is Ah Thep or Ah Boy). Very nice and friendly people and somehow they are very contented with their lives until I decided to feature their food. I hope they have better business as they are really old already.

Small shop with old uncle sitting there.
Just opposite the Ubi Automobile Mart Only
Paad Thai! The girls were crazy over this!
Tom Yum Soup
Olive Fried Rice – Real preserved olives are minced and fried together.
BBQ Squid. All time favourite. A must try! Cooked perfectly till tender and tasty. Must eat with chilli.
Deep Fried Seabass with Green Mango Salad (Som Tam) topping
Thai Fishcake. Very nice texture. Special sauce made by the cook.
All these food goes best with Singha Beer!

Rating: 4.5/5 (No aircon and got funny smell coming from the Thai provision shop next door.)

Taste: Very nice like I said. A change from the expensive Thai restaurants we use to know. Other must tries are Pandan Chicken, Fried Chicken Wings, Tanghoon Salad, Pineapple Rice, etc. Oh for the Thais, you might like to know they have glutinous rice (Khao Niao) as well to go with your dishes instead of white rice.

Portion: Very good.

Price: All the above for only $57.00. (Did not show us consuming 4 can drinks and 1 hot tea)

RTE: Always! My mum just love eating here!

Operating Hours: 11am to 9pm

Location: 301 Ubi Avenue 1 (see comments for new address)

Penang Food Restaurant

Advertisements

Someone recommended me to go try the Penang Assam Laksa at Geylang Lor 25A. This restaurant used to be at Lorong 15 but moved here and I reckon it’s the silly rental cos the traffic at Lor 15 is a lot better.

So I parked at the open carpark just on the left after turning left to Lor 25A and then walk a little nearer to Paya Lebar MRT. The place is located along the shophouses, somewhere in the middle. I was there at 10pm so no one was eating there.

Address of the restaurant

Ordered their famous Penang Assam Laksa, big bowl is $4 while the small one is only $3. Portion is quite big. Very tasty and sourish, a tad spicy, full of minced fish, definitely worth the $4.

The black sauce is prawn paste. Adds damn good flavour to the assam laksa!
Ah ha, there you go for the noodles. Their noodles apparently is a little more chewy on the texture. Quite nice.

Then I ordered the Shanghai Chicken Claypot also. $6 only. Quite nice. Tasted like the Sesame Oil Chicken but with herbal taste to it. Not bad.

Shanghai Claypot Chicken... Love the sauce... so I ordered a small bowl of rice... hehe...

Bill came up to $12.40… I think they forgot to put in another glass of homemade barley drink. But I paid the amount anyways lah. 🙂

Bill

Overall the food is pretty good. I would go back again to eat the laksa.
