LIANG JI @ALJUNIED – ALJUNIED, SINGAPORE

Half a stall for cheaper rent
Dominic the boss
Nicely coated with egg fried carrot cake
Check out the Hae Bi Hiam
I can still taste the wok hei lingering in my mouth and memory

Have always wanted to visit Liang Ji but never had the chance. Heard so much about the owner Dominic and his past and blah blah blah which I don’t really care cos that’s the past. What matters most is that his food is good and like any other hawkers and F&B owners out there, we are all fighting hard to survive. Those not in F&B will never understand… Especially those so called foodies who will not hold back in destroying a F&B outlet.

One thing I applaud Dominic is his willingness to try new things, fighting spirit and be creative in his offerings even though hawker food is quite hard to divert from the original way of taste and cooking. He beats many others who would only blame the government for not providing when they cannot excel in what they are suppose to do best. I do not know him well but I know he has a lot of ‘brothers’ supporting him which to me, money can’t buy one.

What I like about Liang Ji’s Fried Kway Teow is that every plate is fried individually (that’s what I saw lah) and with a lot of his legendary wok hei! And the carrot cake was so artistically fried, making sure every bit of carrot cake is coated with egg… Yummy!

Check out my reviews in the video and below:

Easy. Chatuchak Beef Noodles – MacPherson, Singapore

Advertisements

Opened not too long ago by young hawkerpreneurs, this Thai style beef noodles is really pretty close to what I ate in Thailand. Got the lead from one of my riders working in Wawa Pictures and so here I am.

Located away from the main road, this little stall is tucked away from sight and you’ll have to find the coffeeshop that is within some neighbourhoods. Check it out.

I put about half of the little saucer… damn spicy but shioks!

Rating: 4.5/5.

Taste: The broth is da bomb!!! Rich and beefy! A little sweet like Thai style but I reckon the Thais would love it sweeter! Glass noodles are nicer and chewy, the way I like it! Beef Shank and beef slices could be a little more tender but the satisfaction from the broth and noodles are enough to hide that part. The chilli oil is really damn spicy! Really awesome!

Portion: Above average. Noodles quite good portion or is it cos I dieting?

Service: Self-service

Ambience: Coffeeshop

Price: $6 + $1.50 (extra shank)

RTE: Yes! The roast meats stall beside is also damn good!

The Pasta Boutique – Bedok, Singapore

Advertisements

Recently I was contacted by one of the partners of this little stall located in Bedok area to try out their food. So I brought along some foodies who were not working on one of the days I was off.
Located at a corner of a coffeeshop, the stall stood out from its modern outlook. But definitely overshadowed by some household stalls that were there for the longest time. Nevertheless, we ordered their signatures and see the reviews below:

Stall
Creamy Bacon & Mushroom Pasta ($9.50) – I love this so much. Love how the creamy sauce is reduced into the pasta and yet still holding the al dente-ness. Very yummy dish!
Chilli Crab Pasta ($10.50). Taste is a fusion Asian taste with kaffir lime leaves on top. Very generous in crab meat toppings.
Salted Egg Prawn Ravioli ($13.80) Four large pieces of homemade prawn ravioli, salted egg sauce, chilli padi and curry leaves. The skin was a little thick for us but the taste was good.
Hearty Platter (For 2 at $29.80) – A great deal which consist of 220gm Striploin Steak, 160gm Lamb Chop, 250gm Chicken Chop. Served with Mashed potato and Ratatouille. Choice of sauce: Mustard, Black Pepper, Mushroom.

Rating: 4/5.

Taste: Overall taste is good, just need to tweak on some of the recipe to make it great.

Portion: Average.

Service: Order at counter and food will be served to table.

Ambience: Coffeeshop

Price: Listed above.

RTE: Yes!

汕源鱼圆肉脞面 (San Yuan Gourmet) – Ang Mo Kio, Singapore

Advertisements

Was told that this is a 24hrs stall and I decided to check it out since I was around the area. Wasn’t difficult to find them, just have to listen out for ladle-clanging-on-porcelain-bowl sound and you’ll find them.

Naturally when I was there, there’s a queue. I dunno if the queue was there because the noodles are damn good or it’s because it’s the only noodle stall there 24hrs? Only way is to find out.

Long queue lah…

My bowl of Bak Chor Mee $3

Interesting they have crispy ikan bilis inside. Adds to the flavours.

Fishball soup $2

Rating: 4.5/5.

Taste: Really like the taste of the noodles but I found the noodles were a little soggy for me. The pork lard bits were crispy and burst in my mouth. The addition of ikan bilis was a final touch to the whole awesome taste. Pork and liver were very fresh and cooked to perfection without blood sightings. Fishballs were smooth and springy type. Overall was good.

Portion: Good portions.

Service: Self-service.

Ambience: Hawker centre, very dim lighting, dirty tables cos no cleaners at night.

Price: $3 for noodles, $2 for fishballs soup

RTE: I might… cos there’s a 24hrs Giant supermarket and bakery there catered for people like me.

Hong Shan Soon Kueh – Toa Payoh, Singapore

Advertisements

Intro:
Was here to try the famous Lai Heng Mushroom Minced Meat Mee and I noticed the workers and boss at this stall at the corner were busy churning out trays and trays of kueh for steaming! Then the OMG moment came… the soon kueh is the real SOONG! (That’s how Teochews pronounce bamboo shoot) Soon Kueh dates back a long way to the Chaozhou and Shantou cities of the Guangdong Province! It’s definitely my first encounter with something so traditional here and I am so damn happy about it!

The owner told me he has been doing this since he was a young man… easily more than 30 years already! A classic SG Legendary!

All handmade on the spot
Ready to steam ah!
Steamed Gu Chye Kueh!
Steamed Peng Kueh!
My orders

Taste:
Ordered the Soon Kueh, Gu Chye Kueh and Peng Kueh. Soon Kueh wins me over immediately cos of the filling of course, the skin texture together with the Gu Chye Kueh, is lightly chewy and soft. Damn good! Gu Chye Kueh fillings on the other hand was a little fibrous for me. Still like the soft soft type. But tasty though. Peng Kueh was nice and soft, prefer it to have a little more dried shrimps and mushroom inside. If not like a bit plain.

Price:

$1.30 for Soon Kueh and Peng Kueh. $1.10 for Gu Chye Kueh.

Goodicious – Upper Paya Lebar, Singapore

Advertisements

Intro:I was looking for durians at The Durian Story located at Prestige Point along Upper Paya Lebar Road when the owner Jonathan shared with me about this Goodicious place. Goodicious is just opened in February 2017 and located in this Gourmet House coffeeshop which personally I would not have visited if not for leads. Chef Yaoyi spent a good 8 years in hotels learning the robes to better western culinary and decided to venture on his own to experience managing his own F&B outlet. Well Big Roy is always very supportive of young entrepreneurs especially hawkers!

Store front

Grilled Pork Burger ($7.50)

Takes the longest to cook but definitely worth the wait. Juicy and well seasoned. Yums!

Pulled Pork Nacho Cheese Fries ($5)

The pulled pork is very well seasoned and slow cooked over 8 hours. Super yummy side to order!

Creamy Truffle & Bacon Pasta ($8). Lovely creaminess to this carbonara pasta with generous bacon and mushroom bits sautéed inside. Filled with truffle aroma when arrived at the table.

Cod Fish & Chips ($8.50). The most expensive item on the menu for now, I totally love the crispness of the batter and the smart choice of Cod fish instead of the mushy Dory. Love it!

Promotion of March 2017, Pork Chop ($8). May be permanently in the menu thereafter cos this is a super dope dish!

Soaked in brine marinate over 24hrs to attain the tenderness which literally melted in our mouths. Black pepper sauce is also customed in-house and you can taste anywhere else using such freshly grounded black pepper. Imma heading there again this month in case it’s gone!

Taste:
My foodie friends and myself have tried 5 of their items and overall we felt was so worth the price we paid and the food was much better than expected! See the pics above for descriptions.

Secret to great tasting noodles!

Taste:

The bowl of goodness comes with 2 very fresh shrimps, sliced fishcake, 2 fishballs, pork slices and pork lard. The noodles are very different; eggy, supple, and very yummy. Not your regular alkaline tasting HK noodles. Really love the texture of it! Fishballs are really nice and soft too!
