Like Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice – Farrer Park, Singapore

Advertisements

Like Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice… No, I’m not telling you I like chicken rice but who doesn’t right? Just that Like is the name of the newly opened chicken rice stall housed in the same coffeeshop as DFTBA Kitchen operated by a middle age aunty sharing her chicken rice recipes with everyone. Not many places actually use kampong chicken for chicken rice due to the lean flesh textures of these free range chicken.

I have mixed reviews from my fellow foodie friends as some liked the rice and some liked the chicken better. Nevertheless even though it is kampong chicken, the prices are pretty reasonable starting from $3 per plate. We didn’t get to try the rice balls cos we were there around closing time but trying the rice itself was suffice.

See aunty closing already, shows how late we were
See the kampong chicken, not fatty and all muscles haha
Side dishes. i would prefer them to be soaked overnight for braised items cos these are prolly cooked the day itself.

Rating: 4/5.

Taste: It just feels healthy eating this haha. Chicken is nice and tender although not as slippery as those famous brands. Rice is nice and fragrant.

Portion: Average

Service: Good

Ambience: Coffee shop

Price: Starts from $3

RTE: Maybe.

DFTBA Kitchen – Farrer Park, Singapore

Advertisements

One look at the name you must be wondering what this kitchen is cooking right? Well this place is a little hidden gem which I discovered recently for BKT… Yes, Bak Kut Teh!

Weird is the fact this place is located nearby 2 other famous BKT places! Why compete with these big guys? Well they have an advantage. They sell herbal BKT and also dry ones. Other advantage is, their prices are cheaper than the other 2!

So WTH does DFTBA means? It literally means Don’t Forget To Be Awesome. And owner Connie,  a retired police officer, never fails to be. She has since invited old folks from homes for lunch at their premise and they all enjoyed the food! Opening DFTBA in May 2015 is totally out of passion for cooking and good food!

I have since visited DFTBA twice and both occasions the food didn’t fail me. Check out the pics below!

Housed in Hoe Lye Coffeeshop
Located at far left corner
Yummy herbal BKT. Not exactly like your Malaysian dark soup type but this is a pleasant light herbal soup
Dry BKT. Love the way they fry it with shredded cuttlefish. Damn yums and eating with white rice is a must!
Latest inclusion. Braised pork leg. Very nice and very tender.
Ngoh Hiang. Very nice side dish.

Rating: 4.5/5.

Taste: Very nice. The passion is felt through the food from the owner. Try their Sesame Oil Chicken and Sambal Lady’s Finger if you have a bigger group.

Portion: Average.

Service: Excellent. Their laughter a are contagious!

Ambience: Coffeeshop. Can get quite hot.

Price: In the range of $5 and $10 portions.

RTE: Oh yeah when the craving comes!

Location: 97 Rangoon Road (2016 – They have moved to 335 Smith Street Hawker Centre #02-119)

Hours: 11.30am -8pm (Closed on Sun)

Whampoa Keng Fish Head Steam Boat Restaurant – Balestier, Singapore

Advertisements

I’ve been patronising this place for the longest time… maybe almost 2 decades… but since I’ve started eatwithroy.com, I have not written about this place at all! Maybe because they have been doing so well for so many years that I thought they do not need any more publicity. But then again, the other side of me is telling me that their food is so good, more people should know about it… hence this blog post! ;P

I’ve been to Whampoa Keng again recently and the food standards are still there. Really impressed with the way they have kept up the standards for such a long time since they started in Whampoa market! And they have since opened up at Rangoon Road as well as in Batam Island, Indonesia… which I will share some of the pics below. Check out the foods that I would order at this lovely restaurant.

Restaurant frontage. See the queue…
Main unit where the main door is
They took over the next door unit also where there are more seating.
The chilli sauce goes damn well with the fresh fish slices which we ordered.
Our order of Batang fish slices steam boat ($40.00). Lovely thick slices of boneless fish. Something I cannot get in China haha. The charcoal for steamboat is just what makes it so good. Love it!
Yummy yummy fish slices closed up. This soup is the typical teochew style where they use sour plum inside and loads of bones to boil the soup for hours.
Oyster Omelette ($10.00) – Yummy with loads of medium sized oysters.
Sauteed Spinach in Assorted Eggs ($13.00) – Cooked in lovely stock which makes this soupy veg dish so good.
See they use deep fried fish baits for making the veg more tasty.
Fried Clams with Spring Onion ($10.00) – Pretty good as the sauce thickens and coated all over the clams.
Deep Fried Prawn Paste Chicken ($10.00) – A must order. They have perfected this dish over so many years. Crispy and damn juicy inside.
Me and lady boss Doris. We’ve known each other for so long and this is our first time taking pic together.
