Jean Pierre Sancho Cafe – Perth City, Australia

Advertisements

Was here on my second day in Perth after my grueling first day at the coffee school. It was a Sunday so many places were closed. I spotted this place while driving and all really by chance. So I parked the rented car on the side of the road and went into the cafe to place my order. To my surprise, this cafe has many awards for their bakery and also some business of the year for 2012.

Store front
Alfresco sitting on the outside
Yeah got steps up to the counter… quite a weird design inside actually
Look at all the pastries!
Our orders
My latte
Website

Rating: 4/5.

Taste: Pretty good but could be better if they can heat up for us. The raisin and croissant were good!

Portion: Slightly bigger than normal.

Service: Could have given a 4.5 or 5 rating ‘cos they refuse to slice the organic loaf which we ordered for takeaway. And the pastries were not reheated for us but I understand some bakeries/cafes feel that reheating will spoil the taste and texture of the pastries.  But I believe light reheating is ok. Latte also took quite long to brew.

Ambience: Seating for 3 or more mainly on the outside. Inside are catered for 1-2 pax seating mostly. Weird staircase in the middle that leads to a shopping mall I think.

RTE: I would if on a Sunday again. 🙂 Otherwise will try other places.

Location: They have 3 outlets but I went to this one at 878 Hay Street, Perth City. Check out their website see last picture.

Surprisingly I got to eat such good ramen inside airports. So good I finished all the soup! The broth itself is amazingly thick and full of flavor! Wow! Check out the pics below:

Pork Rib Ramen… Check out the broth!!!
Ice Latte without the ice to dilute the coffee.
Soup finished!

Rating: 5/5.

Taste: Was very tasty. Pork rib a tad salty though but it is the result of soaking in sauces

Portion: Slightly above average.

Service: The one serving is pleasant and nice. The rest I don’t know.

Ambience: As per all China airport cafes, average decor.

Price: RMB60 for ramen, RMB40 for ice latte

RTE: Yes, whenever flying back to Singapore!

Location: Shanghai Pudong Airport Terminal 1, towards Gates 1-28.

胡须张 Formosa Chang – Taipei, Taiwan

Advertisements

Friends who frequent Taipei will know this name. In direct translation is Beard Zhang. This is not a pub or an attraction. It’s actually a well known economical rice value packs takeaways (便当), which is almost everywhere in Taipei… and expanding outwards. Came highly recommended by a friend (Thanks Elaine!), so I had to try this on my 2nd day in Taipei! This is great for those stuck in the hotel rooms cos of bad weather or too lazy to go out. 🙂 They started from just doing these value packs and now they have dishes so you can just call and order, and your lunch or dinner can be settled.

Packaging box
招牌便当
卤肉便当
This one’s no longer on the menu… guess not so popular.
White Bittergourd Soup With Spare Ribs. Very tasty but pretty oily.
Receipt

Rating: 4/5.

Taste: Too many options to choose from. Tasted quite good but quite oily. Best option when you just wanna chill out in your hotel.

Portion: Average.

Price: Very affordable. See pic. But min order is TWD$300.

RTE: Yes! Wanna try the rest of the other rice packs!

Location: All over Taipei! Check out their website and call the nearest outlet near your hotel! http://www.fmsc.com.tw/retail.php

牛轧堂 (Beef Noodles) – Taipei, Taiwan

Advertisements

Went to Kunming Street as I was recommended the best beef noodles at 牛店 which is just across from this shop that I’m writing about but they do not open in the afternoon after 2.30pm and reopens only at 5.30pm. I guess their business must be damn good cos they were busy preparing for that night’s business. Hence no choice, I crossed the street and spotted another beef noodles shop. The deco looks neat and decent and the boss of the place warmly welcomed us to take a seat upstairs after we placed our orders.

Shop front… Good thing is, they don’t have too many things on the menu to confuse the customers.
天香牛肉面 Heavy broth beef noodles
清炖牛肉面 Light broth beef noodles
大豆干和卤蛋 Braised beancurd and eggs
Bill… Pretty good prices

Video of the tenderness of the beef can be seen here – http://youtu.be/f7lVJvAM7Dw

Rating: 4/5.

Taste: Pretty good I must say. Specially made broth from gouqizi, vegetables and chicken, boiled for hours. Beef slices were tender and melts in your mouth. Noodles are also specially made for the shop. The side dishes of beancurd and eggs are nice too!

Portion: Average

Price: TWD140 per bowl. A lot cheaper than the popular ones which starts from TWD180 onwards…

RTE: Maybe if I’m around the area but then again, there are so many food places in Taipei… and only 1 stomach… ;P

Location: No. 134-2 Kunming Street, Wanhua District, Taipei City 108. Tel: (02)2331-0397. Opens daily from 1100-2200hrs.

BANGKOK CITY HOTEL COFFEE HOUSE @ BANGKOK

Advertisements

I promise to write about this for www.agoda.com friends. If you happen to stay in this hotel like I did, and it happen to rain heavily or you happen to feel very tired and don’t feel like moving your ass to anywhere, you should really check out the food at the coffee house below.

I was having a lunch meeting one of the days at the coffee house located at the same lobby of Bangkok City Hotel. Well, it is not a distinctively coffee house but when you approach the staff at the front office, they will get someone to come and take your orders. The menus are not new, and not many varieties, afterall this is a boutique hotel. Hence I ordered what I felt like eating. They have room service as well but I reckon it’s a lot nicer to lunch downstairs and watch tourists go by… 😉

Lobby Coffee House
Pineapple Fried Rice – Awesome
Fried Kale With Roasted Pork – Apparently a local favourite
Fried Red Chicken Curry – This is a really nice dish.

Rating: 5/5

Taste: Put it this way, my Thai counterparts even agreed that the food was good! Wonder who the chef is…. hmmm…

Portion: Average

Price: Very reasonable. Suitable for lunch meetings for local Thais.

RTE: If I’m nearby or staying at same hotel again, I definitely would!

Location: 268 Soi Petchburi 10-12 Petchburi Road, Ratchathewi, Bangkok, 10400, Thailand Tel: (66-2)  215-2929 (http://www.bangkokcityhotel.com/)
