鸿福堂 @ Hong Kong (CNY Edition)

Advertisements

Usually I don’t write twice about a place but because of the upcoming Chinese New Year, and since I’m gonna miss it in my home country Singapore, I’ve decided to write about traditional new year cakes eaten in HK and some can be found in Singapore as well.

I was served a big slice each of each cake for me to try at the shop at Lok Ma Chau MTR Station and I dug in! 🙂

Carrot Cake or Lor Pak Kou... This carrot cake typically in HK is always filled with loads of white radish, dried shrimps, chinese sausage and dried scallops. This was served steamed but if served pan fried with XO sauce, it would be nicer. 🙂
Yam Cake or Wu Tao Kou. The ones in HK has a lot of yam and the same ingredients as those of the carrot cake. This one is yammy yummy.
New Year Cake Or Nin Kou. The difference between HK and SG ones are that HK ones have some coconut flavouring inside. It gives it a nicer aroma definitely. Not very sweet this one and is nice, soft and chewy.
Water Chestnut Cake or Ma Tai Gou. Nice soft and refreshing. I didn't really like it cos I still prefer it cold. This was served hot.
Mango Pomelo Dessert Cake or Yong Chi Kam Lou Kou. A famous dessert made into a pudding cake. I still prefer their drink version instead of this although this cost more than the 4 items above.
Takeaway pack which was made in a hard container which you can recycle for keeping food. Not a bad idea after all.

Rating: 4.5/5. Service is tops!

Taste: Overall pretty good! Love the use of ingredients and loads of it. Of course the prices comes with it as well. 😉

Portion: Average.

Price: They sell in  slabs. HKD$65 for all except the Mango Dessert which cost HKD$85 or soemthing like that. Other than the bpx……..xzXC

RTE: Only good for CNY period so I bought 3 slabs of yam and carrot ones for personal consumption. 🙂

Location: Lok Ma Chau MTR station, Hong Kong.

When you hear Red Mango, you must be thinking it’s either a fruit or dessert store right? This one has both. That’s right, this Korean food chain, made popular in the US is now in 5 locations in Singapore. I happened to chance upon it while I was at Wilkie Edge for dinner one of the Saturdays and my friends were like highly recommending it to me. So after dinner, we strutted to the open concept shop and ordered our favourite flavours… hmmm… favourite flavours… what a tongue twister… can you say it very fast 5 times? EnFrost Cafe (POMO Level 2)

Advertisements
Located at level 2 of POMO (formerly known as Paradiz Centre), the little cafe hardly sits more than 10 of me inside. Tucked in the middle of 2 other food stalls, some people hardly notice this stall. Nevertheless, I was there to try their food! They only have 2 things. Curry Chicken (with rice or bread) and Snow Dessert (with different toppings).

The curry chicken has a strong aroma about it and after tasting it, you’ll know where the aroma comes from. It’s the rumpah (Malay-nonya version of paste made up of different spices) that makes the whole dish so nice and fragrant. Taste wise, excellent. Full body curry taste and very very tasty. The chicken and potato inside were cooked to perfection and portioning is good as well. At only $4 for the curry chicken and $0.70 for the bread! Bread is toasted till crispy on the skin and fluffy inside. So when you dip into the curry sauce and put it in your mouth… I can’t describe the feeling… you must go try it yourself. 🙂

Curry Chicken @ $4
Curry Chicken

The same cafe also sells all sorts of Snow Dessert with fruits! At $3.80 each bowl, it’s worth it cos of the generous portions of fruits on top! Quite a big bowl. 2 normal persons can share 1 bowl lah. Must try too. 🙂 Best of all, you can tell them to go easy on the syrup!

Mango Snow Dessert – SHIOK!
Look at the strands of milky snow… yummy…
Grapes Snow Dessert (Look at the amount of grapes on it… the syrup taste like those bubblegum with instant tattoos)

I will definitely be back for the curry chicken and maybe try the green tea red bean snow dessert the next round! 🙂
