TECK OYSTER – EAST COAST, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

Probably one of the best on my Fried Oyster list. Now, when I exclaim best Fried Oyster, I don’t mean every time good lah. How good it is depends on whether uncle that day good mood or not. Yes, the uncle’s attitude was what deterred us from patronising them in the first place but after we tried it one faithful night, there wasn’t any turning back.

What I like about this stall is that uncle retains the authentic taste of Orh Luak which I reminiscent since young. Not many actually got to taste Fried Oyster during the 70s. I was fortunate cos my nanny and mummy dote on me. Hence this palate of mine got gastronomical since I was able to walk! So I actually checked with the uncle if his grandpa really sold fried oyster on pushcarts last time and he verified it. Taste is truly legendary and the flour is greyish in colour and tender like the old times. Really hope he keep frying or pass down to someone who is as dedicated to keep this tradition going!

SERI SATAY – EUNOS, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

Intro:

Since I’m bed ridden these days I might as well write more. I promised some customers to write more on halal foods and here it is. I have been patronising this satay stall for many times now especially when BLACK&INK started cos it’s just opposite at Eunos Hawker Centre. Check out my reviews below.

The stall
The friendly Abang
My usual order of 5 x mutton and 5 x tripe
Damn yummy mutton
Somehow this tripe caramelises on the outside, damn good
All tables should be left like this. Plates empty. #worldcleanplate

Taste:

I love the authentic taste of this satay, the taste I grew up with. I believe this recipe has been passed down from generations. And the way they BBQ it is just awesome. A little burnt here and there and not overcooked. Damn yummy especially the tripe! So tender!

Price:

$0.60 per stick only. Very affordable compared to so many places.

Portion:

Good size per stick.

Service:

Served at table. The bro taking orders very friendly.

Waiting Time:

HAVELOCK RD BLK 50 FRIED HOKKIEN PRAWN MEE – JALAN BUKIT MERAH, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

Intro:

Whenever I come to the west I totally dunno what to eat. So I dropped some one near Redhill recently and I was intro to the famous Fried Hokkien Mee. So I turned into ABC Brickworks Food Centre and check it out.
Little did I gel the pieces together that actually my other friends have been telling me about this place. So when I was there, I met an old Uncle and Aunty. Uncle is actually being featured in Tiger Beer’s recent uncagestreetfood commercials! He started helping at his mother’s fishball noodle stall when he was in his teens and have been in this hawker business for more than 50 years! Truly a Legendary Hawker!

Taste:

Visited twice already since. First time I ordered the medium plate, not enough… So second trip I ordered the $6 portion which was flooded with ingredients and bigger prawns! I truly love uncle’s version which soaks up all the eggy sauce and gives a nice slime coating on the noodles. Taste wise is exactly what I ate when I was young. Almost similar to Old Simon Road’s but this stall’s sambal chilli and crispy lard dressing adds on to the overall great eating experience. Yums!

545 WHAMPOA PRAWN NOODLES – BUFFALO ROAD, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

Intro:

You know Whampoa is a place where many Legendary Hawkers come from. There’s Whampoa Keng Fish Head Steamboat, Rojak, Fried Hokkien Mee, and this 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles. The original stall still operates at the Whampoa market by the Aunties while 3rd generation daughter Ruifang, operates at Tekka Market & Food Centre. Ruifang left the corporate world in 2013 to continue this 60 year old legacy by her grandfather. She is one of the few young hawkers who believes in keeping the tradition and legacy alive so that our kids and grandchildren know what we enjoyed during our times. I am extremely proud of these young hawkers and respect what they are going through.

Taste:

There’s only Kway Teow, Mee and Beehoon. So I usually order Beehoon + Mee dry. Dry so that I can taste the lovely legendary homemade sambal chilli and the blend of flavours coupled with freshly fried pork lard and shallots. My verdict is the noodles were really yummy and ingredients were generous even for portions of $3. The broth was bursting with flavours, flavours of umami sweetness from so many prawns cooked in it.

$3 or $4.
