Ichida Japanese Dining – Club Street, Singapore

Attended an Omakase dinner one of the evenings with a bunch of friends at this newly opened Japanese restaurant located right smack where all the action is, Club Street. Head Chef Ron Leo hosted us to a wonderful meal of yummilicious Japanese cuisine and sake which left us filled to the brim! Check out the pics below of what we had!

10 UNIQUE F&B OUTLETS IN MELBOURNE

Hey y’all!

I told myself to complete this write up before my next trip and here I am now compiling all the unique eating places which I’ve been to during my last trip in Aug this year (2016). There are definitely more hidden gems located in this beautiful city which I call my second home. Maybe I can unearth them up during my future trips there to visit my beloved God daughter and buddies.

For those going to Melbourne for the first time, this may not be a good guide for you because first timers usually go to the usual touristy and popular places. Follow a tour if you need to but if you like free and easy like me, maybe you might wanna check out my previous posts of the following:

Ok let’s start this unique eating journey now.

1. GLADSTONE VIEWS FISH & CHIPS (CAR BONNET EXPERIENCE)

If you’re renting your cars from APEX like I did, you may be hungry after all the documentation. I found this little takeaway store not too far away, just to try some local fish and chips. It was surprisingly good, so was the burger. Just don’t look at how they prepare the food though, hygiene is definitely questionable. But after deep frying, no worries mate! Afterall, how often you get to enjoy lovely weathers and savour your food off your car bonnet? 😉

2. HELLO COFFEE (DOCKYARD EXPERIENCE)

Found this little gem when I was at Apollo Bay. Located amongst a dockyard area, Hello Coffee started less than a year ago. Very self-sufficient by roasting their own beans and getting supplies from the neighbouring farms. Totally envy them on the the freshness of these supplies! A very nice place to chill and would revisit if I have another chance.

3. FOCUS COFFEE (RARE COFFEE BEANS EXPERIENCE)

Little do many know that this coffee joint imports their beans from the world renowned Ninety Plus Coffee whose coffees are largely sort after. Coming here you will definitely satisfy your caffeine cravings. You may wanna check out their daily specials as well if you’re feeling peckish, they change their menu frequently.

4. LONGRAIN RESTAURANT (HIDDEN GEM EXPERIENCE)

Tucked at the end of Little Burke Street, this restaurant is always crowded with locals mainly and little do they know that the chef there used to work in Michelin starred restaurants. It was recommended by a manager at a whiskey distillery down at Apollo Bay area. The Thai-influenced fusion food was amazing all the way from appetisers to desserts and the wine selection was pretty good as well.

5. THE VERTUE OF THE COFFEE DRINK (BEHIND PETROL KIOSK EXPERIENCE)

This one’s a winner. Finding this place is half the fun! I circled around a few rounds just to find this place. What’s even better is, they have awesome beans which are roasted in-house and the food is just to die for! Service wise is just excellent. Definitely needs a revisit!

6. AUNTY PEG’S (NO MILK EXPERIENCE)

Aunty Peg’s is a spring off of the famous coffee roaster/cafe Proud Mary. This premise not just roast for their own branches but supplies to other cafes as well. so what’s so unique about this place? They only serve black coffee… meaning, they do not have milk at all. So if you love coffee as it is, you can order your filtered coffees and espressos here like I did. Nightmare to milk base coffee drinkers. Heh heh…

7. IZAKAYA DEN (UNDERGROUND EXPERIENCE)

Like some of the places listed here, half the fun is finding them. I came across this place by chance and was indeed quite hard to find. Service is excellent, food is damn good. A little pricey though, but the quality is what you are paying for. Check out below how I found the place.

8. BROTHER BABA BUDAN (CHAIRS OVERHEAD EXPERIENCE)

Ok this place is not exactly hidden but I have not written about it for my previous trips. But the unique thing about this place is that they hanged all the chairs up on the ceiling! But of course their coffee is good as well… Seven Seeds is a little hard to go wrong. 😉

This is another unique place which is introduced by a friend. Love this old train station converted into a cafe. The food here is actually pretty good! Coffee is ok. Best place for brunch but can get super crowded.

Sushi Oh (寿司王) @ Jusco, Shenzhen

Checked out a huge shopping mall quite near where I’m staying in Shenzhen… It’s quite a high class mall with a lot of the big brands. Then there’s Jusco which is a huge supermarket with many groceries available for me to buy but I was there for a different purpose. I was there to check out Sushi Oh… a sushi chain of stores, which is located at the super back part of the mall on same level as the supermarket.

There it is! Quite hard to find the restaurant but I manage to find it nevertheless. Just ask around, this place is well known. The benches outside are for you to wait till seats are available.
Menu
Ambience of the place... The problem with China still is the smoking problem... They smoke everywhere... even in here yes... I would usually fart back to counter but this time I lost badly... too many were farting through their mouths... sigh...
Imagine this is at 9pm and people are still streaming in...
First Up, Salmon Sashimi. Quite thick slices but not as thick as those in Yuen Long. 2 portions here, each portion 5 slices. RMB$33 each portion. Quite fresh though. You can see plates and plates of these coming out from the kitchen. I suspect they have a Salmon Lake back there... ;P
Unagi Rolls. These eel rolls are very well done. Succulent and tasty. RMB$38.
Scallop Rolls. Not a big fan but quite fresh indeed. Forgot how much.
Salmon Sushi... didn't like the cucumber on top... better with a strip of mayonnaise on top but it's fresh and quite tasty overall for the sushi. Forgotten how much also.

Rating: 4.5/5. Service was good but they didn’t allow me to take pictures of the food… which I’m paying for… hmmm…

Taste: Pretty good. But Yuen Long one’s better.

Portion: Slightly above average.

Price: Total bill was RMB$180, which is about SGD$38.00 for 2 persons.

RTE: Maybe when I’m at Jusco again for grocery shopping.

Kam Tin Japanese Restaurant (金田日本料理) @ Yuen Long, NT Hong Kong

I crossed over to Yuen Long in the New Territories of Hong Kong last weekend. My first time there and to my surprise, the whole place is a town on its own! There are so many good places to eat, so many places to shop, karaoke is so cheap (clean ones of course), so many places to eat (oops I said that already) and so crowded!

Streets of Yuen Long. Very near the japanese restaurant...

Met up with my friend who lives there and she brought me to this place for Japanese food… I was like skeptical at first, because I’m in Hong Kong man! I want Char Siew! I want Siew Yoke! I want Beef Brisket! But since she was paying for the meal then I kept my big mouth shut lah…

After alighting from the bus from the causeway, we walked a little to reach this bird will not lay eggs place (鸟不生蛋的地方), which if I was left alone, I will never find it and prolly get lost in the process. It’s located somewhere near B仔凉粉, so if you can find it, just ask the people there. The restaurant is a very small outlet which claims to sit 64 people… Seriously, to me, I think half of that would be comfortable. You know lah, in HK, everything is small… flats are small, offices are small, hotel rooms are small, even eateries are small! So we went in and found a good seat under the aircon. 🙂 To my surprise, the whole place was so crowded until left only a table for us… it was 3pm+! I heard Hong Kongers eat throughout the day… it’s so damn true man! I love HK!!! Woot! So we started ordering what we can possibly finish.

The outside of the restaurant
Restaurant ambience
Must camwhore a bit... behind is where they prepare the food
Super worn out menu book...
Huge Volcano Rolls... the menu has got a lot of selection!
Their super long sushis... this is how they made a name for themselves! Prices seen here are in HKD.
First up, Salmon Sashimi. Super thick slices of about 1cm!!! Super fresh and it just melts in your mouth! For only HKD$45!
See how big each slice and the texture of it...
Sorry I'm just being a bitch... 'cos I wanna make your mouth water!!! Haha...
Soft Shell Crab... HKD$40+. They have already chop up into pieces but they bother to put back into shape and make the crab happy. ;P
Baked oyster with cheese... this one is super yummy... forgot how much...
Have u seen an unagi sushi so long in your life? My first so I must eat... hehe... HKD$18
Have u seen... ok nevermind, I'll just eat... HKD$12 only... wah worth it!
BBQ squid tentacles... not bad lah although not a big fan. Forgot how much...
Damn good beef rolls with Enoki mushrooms. A little burnt taste adds to the perfection. Love it! Forgot how much also! ;P
BBQ Pork Neck slices... pretty good but thinking of the fats in there, I only ate 1-2 slices...
Baked Rice with Tofu, Chicken & Cheese (HKD$38). This is prolly the worst dish there. they should take this out. Got chef's recommendation some more... Tasteless and not enough ingredients.

Rating: 5/5.

Taste: Very fresh and very nice. Very different from what we get in Singapore. Love it!

Portion: Above average. they really live up to their mission.  Good portion, good quality, good service and good prices. Excellent job Becky!

Price: Total bill about HKD$400+, which works out to be about SGD$70+.  Totally worth it for the portions.

RTE: Hell yeah!!!

Barcook Bakery @ OUB Centre

A friend told me about this bakery which opened not too long ago and I heard it’s always long queue during lunch time. So she ta pao for me to try. She bought me the raisin bun with cream cheese inside, which apparently is selling like errr… hot buns now…

Plastic bag that holds all the buns... Why Barcook leh? Funny name...
Looks like an ordinary bun right? Sorry a bit squashed... my bad...
Check out the big juicy raisins... I just love raisins with bread! Hmmm... let me rephrase that.... I just love bread!!!
Check out the cream cheese inside... the taste is just heavenly lah. The cream cheese inside gives it a little sourish yoghurty taste. The buns are full of very very fragrant milky taste and scent. Just by smelling the buns makes you wanna eat it right away!

Rating: 5/5

Taste: Just perfect. This is what buns should taste like. Tasted other type of buns also. Try the Nacho Cheese Bun… you’ll be in for a surprise. 🙂

Portion: Average

Price: $1.20 or something like that… was told only $1+

RTE: Yeah!!! I wanna try their other buns!!!

Location: Basement of OUB Centre @ One Raffles Place. Opposite Starhub.

ISHI MURA BENTO COMBO SETS @ POMO

Ok I know I’ve been here like many times already but they have too many things for me to feature. Let me talk about my all time favourites again which is the grilled pork belly… a little fatty only but the flavour is just too good to resist!!! Check it out!

Good price with good selection. That's why I love this place!
My ultimate combo choice... Teriyaki Chicken and Pork Belly... Good that they provide veg in the middle with very appetising sourish sesame sauce
Pork Belly up close... sorry for the chilli flakes... I put that myself lah... hehe...
Chicken up close... chilli flakes again.. ;P
Additional rice for only 90 cents with choice of curry or teriyaki sauce... so I tried the curry one... yummy!

Rating: 5/5

Taste: Love the grilled smoky flavour in the meats. Gives anyone the appetite!

Portion: Above average

Price: $6.90 only…

RTE: Yeah once a week!

Location: Level 3 POMO (f.k.a. Paradiz Centre)
