幸运板面鱼汤 – HOUGANG, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

Have been coming to this coffeeshop for the famous Fried Oyster and Char Kway Teow ever since they moved from the old wet market area at Hougang Ave 3. Haven’t really tried this Ban Mian stall so I decided to give the Ma La Ban Mian and fried gyoza a try. As you can see, she has a lot of variety so good luck making your choice for your meal!

What I like about this stall is that the lady manages it all by herself. From prepping, cooking, deep frying, taking orders, packing food, collect money, etc. I believe she was from China but has been here in SG very long already. Very friendly and accommodating.

BLACK & WHITE ROJAK – HOUGANG, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

I usually don’t order salad but this local salad is what I would order. I discovered this stall when I was there to visit https://youtu.be/DA7HWNhpzdw. And this is not even a proper stall, a pop up stall out of 2, which is definitely maximising the coffeeshop to earn more rentals.

What I like about this rojak stall is that the aunty uses very good quality prawn paste, which reminds me of the prawn paste factory I visited in Penang. Power stuff! And she also uses torch ginger flower in the rojak which adds flavours to the whole pack of yumminess! As it is a fruit rojak, the blending of green mangoes with the prawn paste is heavenly! I like mine without added sugar and more assam juice and boy, it’s really yummy and my kind of ‘salad’. Felt healthy after eating that! Haha! 😝

No videos for this stall as I didn’t expect it to be so good after I tapao home to try.

鑫鑫 Xin Xin Claypot Rice – Hougang, Singapore

Advertisements

I reckon I’m reviewing too much on Hougang foods but no pian leh, recently around this area a lot and Hougang is where I grew up in. Came to know Xin Xin from a network of F&B bosses and went there support. Founded by 2 graduates who decided to try hawker business and started this traditional food line in 2018.

What I like about this stall is that the 2 young gentlemen gave up their comfortable office jobs to do something which most graduates wouldn’t even consider a bit. At the same time, using charcoal to cook the rice will definitely taste better, not forgetting it’s time consuming and thrice the price of gas. We should encourage such Young Hawkerprenuerships so that our generations below us will get to taste authentic traditional foods like this charcoal claypot rice.

海霞板面 Handmade Noodle – Hougang, Singapore

Advertisements

Individual stalls like these are either  recommended by someone or discovered by yourself. I was checking out another stall but to my disappointment, so I was fortunate that I came across this stall and the rojak stall which I will blog separately.

What I like about this stall is the lady boss who is very cheerful and obviously hard working cos she’s there as early as 5am to prep the stall to start selling at 6am. Even heard those who have moved away to Jurong come back just to eat her ban mian.

And what I like about this Mee Hoon Kueh is that the dough is super yellowish eggy and I believe she kneaded it till smooth and left to proof before using it for cooking. As a result, the kueh is extra fluffy and soft to every bite, which is a totally different gastronomical experience from your usual white plain flour mee hoon kueh. On the other hand, the Red Wine Chicken Mee Sua was also yummy, with appropriate wine strength in the broth which feels darn good while drinking it hot. I reheated my tapao soups but if you can, have it there will be nicer. They also have the ‘Fried Ban Mian’ which is literally just the dry version. Can skip.

利发小老板 – HOUGANG, SINGAPORE

Didn’t know the existence of this new stall until I revisited this coffeeshop that I grew up with. Used to be a Prawn Noodle stall after the renovation but now, this Bak Chor Mee stall. Queued up for it and tried the Mee Sua version. It was damn good!!! Prolly one of the best around I’ve tried with the right blend of vinegar, sauce and chilli paste. Tapao the Mee Pok version for Diana and she also agreed the taste is good!

Taste: 🍳🍳🍳🍳🍳
Portion: 🍳🍳🍳🍳🍳
Service: Self-service. Not nasty even though they were busy.
Price: From $4.00. Mee Sua add $0.50.
Ambience: Coffeeshop

麵記食閣 – Hougang, Singapore

Advertisements

Sorry for not writing much lately cos most quick updates are done on my Instagram account @eatwithroy. You guys can follow me there too. Work has been tiring cos a lot of stuffs to do at the beginning and hope operations will smooth out soon.

Wanted a nice local brekkie yesterday and I thought I should visit a coffeeshop which I haven't visited for the longest time. The coffeeshop has renovated and there are many stalls there now with pretty impressive offerings. However, they have adopted the self-service mode and everyone has to queue to get their food. Gone are the days when you can order and find a seat. So it's quite tough for one person to find a seat during peak periods, hence have to share table. I waited for like 15 mins as there were some orders before me:

Rate: 4.5/5.

Taste: Got the old school taste and although it looks plain, it's very tasty! Love the suppleness of the noodles. Damn yums!

Portion: $4 portion is good.

Service: Self service

Ambience: Coffeeshop

Price: $3 or $4

RTE: Definitely

ROY THAI KITCHEN – HOUGANG, SINGAPORE (CLOSED)

Advertisements

Intro:This is definitely a hidden gem which I came to know recently. Roy Thai Kitchen (no, I don’t have any invested interest in this if you’re wondering!) is nestled within a coffeeshop where the famous roast meat joint Guan Chee is. Although competition is strong, the boss of RTK (Which literally means Authentic Thai Kitchen) Admond, is determined to set a foothold in there to start providing affordable authentic Thai food to the neighbourhood. Even the Head Chef, Lob and second chef are from Thailand! Check out my reviews below:

Humble little stall in a coffee shop!

Damn yummy pepper prawn crackers! The sambal even more bombastic! These crackers are complimentary for a la carte orders only.

Oh when I sipped this Tom Yum Seafood soup ($8/$12), I know Mum will like this. Very nice and yummy.

Sliced Pork Salad ($8) Love the spicy and tangy taste.

Green Curry Chicken ($8) for a very good portion and the flavours are quite close to what I had in Northern Thailand. Love this dish a lot. Go with white steamed rice best! Alternatively, you can order their Green Curry Fried Rice ($5) too!

Thai Style Steamed Fish with Lime Juice ($22). Priced very reasonably and taste really appetising and homely. A must order!

Pad Thai ($5) doesn’t come with any meat cos originally is like that. Best of all, final details like little dried shrimps are added which authenticates how Thais love it. Another must order!

Me, Chef Lob, Admond & Wife!

Taste:

Generally, all the dishes we had were very tasty! Really good! Only set back was the Sliced Pork Salad, which was a little tough for my liking. But the team will be working on this and hopefully we’ll have yummy tender pork on our next visit! Keep up the good work guys!
