Shenjing is famous for it’s roast goose in Hong Kong but you don’t have to travel there just to look for good roast goose. Many have learnt the trick of roasting good goose and they are all over HK and Guangdong province of China. One of which, was pretty near my Shenzhen office at Huaqiangbei area, the electronic city of Shenzhen.
The eatery is very very small and usually super crowded during lunch hours. The weird thing is, their meals are not cheap there as compared to some RMB$15 ones along the same road. But people would queue up and pack or dine in. So I gave it a try, and was lucky to find a table.

Taste: Roast goose not bad. The skin is the key factor. Very yummy. Flesh is tender. Char siew is typical lah, lean and a bit chewy cos of the tendons.
Portion: Average.

Was invited for a media tasting recently at this place which I believe many people have not heard of. I was however curious to find out how different it is from the Pulau Ubin cuisine from the ones I grew up with. Nah, I wasn’t from Pulau Ubin, just that my nanny’s brother lives there, and I stay with them during the school holidays. Yes he still lives there. ;P
When I arrived at Gumajia after closing the coffee bar, I was greeted with the group of bloggers there. Very family style, with kids some more, definitely my first time encountering this mix. The table was not big enough to accommodate everyone (we had more than 10 pax on a big round table), wasn’t really comfy but tried to blend in lah.
Check out some of the food that I’ve tried while some were wiped out and I don’t have the opportunity to savour them.
Frontage.Ubin La La Beehoon ($18). You must be wondering not another white beehoon… But this one has an awesome stock to begin with and tasted really good. Highly recommended,Crispy Been Jal ($12/$18). Totally caught us by surprise was this dish of crispy brinjal. Lightly seasoned and tossed fried with garlic and french beans. Another must order dish.Salted Egg Yolk Crab (Seasonal Price) – Crabs are fresh and juicy. Taste is really good on the sauce.Yuan Yang Kai Lan ($12/$18/$24). Taste like the usual kailan but a lot efforts. Applaud the chef going through so many procedures.Gu Ma Traditional Beancurd Soup ($28). $28 for soup… you must be wondering why so expensve, wait till you see the amount of ingredients inside in the pic below.Check out the amount of ingredients use! Soup is really rich and bursting with flavours!Assam Fish Head – $28. Freshness from the fish head was tasted. Very well balance of flavours!
XO Sauce Prawn Noodles ($36). Probably one of the best prawn noodle soups I’ve tasted! Rich broth served with fresh prawns. Yummy to the max.Fruity Enzyme Drink ($4.80) – Detoxify with this refreshing drink!Fruity Enzyme Jelly ($5.80). Taste like sour plum. 🙂Me and Gu Ma (Aunty)Rating: 5/5.

Guan Chee HK Roasted Duck has been around for some time but I remember only coming to this place a few times. They are located at the corner of a coffeeshop, roast their meats daily behind their stall, hence you can smell their amazing aroma from the roasting from far away. I was here for groceries after work and managed to catch them before they close at around 8pm.
As you can see nothing much left when you’re there after 7pm.I have to agree…My dinnerRoast Duck is really fragrant and tasty. A little hard and cold though, which it’s prolly ‘cos of hanging out there too long already.Amazing chilli paste to go with your meatsBeancurd is totally soaked with the sauce… quite yummyCheck out the char siew, with around 40% of fats. I can only imagine how awesome when it’s fresh out of the roasting!
There are some facts that I have researched on lately that cleared my mind. All along I always thought the Canton-i (http://wp.me/pCcuC-4A) at ION Orchard in Singapore is related to Dragon-i in Malaysia… I was right, Canton-i is under the Dragon-i Restaurant Group of Companies. Whether the outlet in Singapore is a direct expansion or franchise, I’ve yet to find out. The other thing I’ve always thought that Canton-i was under the Paradise Group of Singapore, apparently not, just that they have Canton Paradise under their group which sounds similar.
Anyways this is my second time here at this outlet in KL after so many years… the first time was before I started writing on food some 5 years ago. So I was in town for work and then met up with a friend for dinner to check out their food once again. Check out the pics below:

So becareful the piping hot contents. Better to tear it in the middle then try to balance the fillings on each hand while you indulge on the buns… Yeah you can lick the overflowing egg custards on your hands after that! 🙂Very good chilli paste they have to go with your food.炸酱面 – Regretted ordering this cos not very nice. But friend wanted to eat this so…Skillfully shaving the skin and flesh off the duckRoasted Peking Duck – This is their signature naturally. Crispy skin and tender flesh. Yums. But as compared to the one in Canton-i Singapore, Canton-i one is very fragrant and a lot tastier due to the apple wood they use from Australia.Wraps and condiments to go with your peking duck.The balance bones and meat from the half duck we ordered. Cooked in sichuan style in a claypot, quite a good dish but pretty oily.Spinach with 3 types of eggs and stock. Something light to go with the rich food.

Taste: Standard still as good as last time. If I had my other foodie friends with me, we could have ordered all their signature dishes.
Portion: Average.
Service: Excellent. However, you can see the manageress keep eyeing on the other service staff. I feel for the waitresses/waiters.
Ambience: Not as posh as I remember it to be. But still quite comfy for diners.
Price: All that for around RM$200. About S$80. In Singapore it will cost more than that.
RTE: I might but I still prefer the street food wherever I travel. 🙂

Haven’t been shopping or even walking along the streets of Bukit Bintang in KL for the longest time and this time I made it a point with a friend who happened to fly in Kuala Lumpur at the same time from Hong Kong. So we decided to catch up over dinner and while we were wandering around, we saw this place with all the signages…

So we decided to check out this place… how wrong can it go when it’s recommended by 蔡澜, the famous food critic/celebrity from Hong Kong. To our surprise, this is suppose to be a foodcourt where they get the best streetfood in Malaysia and house them there! Check out the pics below, and tell me how not to salivate??!!
No fix layout, it’s a little like a maze actually. Who cares when there’s aircondition? ;P金莲记 Kim Lian Kee – Famous Fried Hokkien Mee since 1927 from the Chinatown of KL. This is a must try!You can see the cook frying your noodles and they fry plate by plate to ensure consistent quality.This is damn yummy but at RM$11.50. Normally you can get this outside for RM$6-$8?Pin Qian Bak Kut Teh – Another must try if you like the black soup herbal versions.Bak Kut Teh is seriously rich herbal broth. Very yummy but no soup top up. Sad.They have Braised Pork Leg as well. Not too bad.Fried Oyster Omelette – Not too bad, not crispy on the outer layer of the flour.Penang prawn cake and ngoh hiang. Soso only.The char siew looks damn good so must order…Yummy plate of char siew for RM$20. I find it a little hard though. Maybe been there for some time cos we had it for dinner.

Taste: Hokkien Mee is really good. We should have tried the wan ton noodles and beef ball noodles but no stomach space. Bak Kut Teh is good too.

I was in Hong Kong for a meeting and was looking for a place for a quick lunch when I chanced upon this little cafe. I found it unique cos the shop is actually located underground of a building in TST.

I ordered my lunch like most Hong Kongers do, the sets are usually value for money. Hence I ordered the set of soup, spaghetti and latte for HKD$70.

The soup to be honest are similar to Campbell’s but the spaghetti is pretty good. Looks simple and plain but taste ok. Most importantly, the salmon didn’t stink. Latte is pretty good, nutty flavour, medium bold and served at the temperature of my liking… hot.
The cafe do have sets for afternoon teas as well.
Afternoon tea sets available… time to change their menus, so old.
For HKD$70 (SGD$11), definitely worth it and even cheaper than Singapore. If you’re around that area you can pop by and check this place out!
