Like Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice – Farrer Park, Singapore

Like Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice… No, I’m not telling you I like chicken rice but who doesn’t right? Just that Like is the name of the newly opened chicken rice stall housed in the same coffeeshop as DFTBA Kitchen operated by a middle age aunty sharing her chicken rice recipes with everyone. Not many places actually use kampong chicken for chicken rice due to the lean flesh textures of these free range chicken.

I have mixed reviews from my fellow foodie friends as some liked the rice and some liked the chicken better. Nevertheless even though it is kampong chicken, the prices are pretty reasonable starting from $3 per plate. We didn’t get to try the rice balls cos we were there around closing time but trying the rice itself was suffice.

See aunty closing already, shows how late we were
See the kampong chicken, not fatty and all muscles haha
Side dishes. i would prefer them to be soaked overnight for braised items cos these are prolly cooked the day itself.

Rating: 4/5.

Taste: It just feels healthy eating this haha. Chicken is nice and tender although not as slippery as those famous brands. Rice is nice and fragrant.

Portion: Average

Service: Good

Ambience: Coffee shop

Price: Starts from $3

RTE: Maybe.

I really hate the fact that I cannot update my blogs as frequent as I want to. Super annoying but work’s a chore hence have to sleep a little later just to type this entry out. 🙁

There are just too many bloggers out there doing Top 10s for food places. So I’m starting WIWO for my next few write ups. WIWO simply means, ‘What I Would Eat’ at a certain location featuring 2-5 stalls depending on the place and presence of good food. One good example is UBI 350. UBI 350 is a coffeeshop with hidden gems and I have been patronising 2 stalls for almost a decade now. Check out the pics below:

My regular order of roast chicken, sio bak and egg. A set like this cost only $5. Cheap right?
The rice they use is pretty awesome fragrant rice. I used to eat like 2-3 bowls.
Yummy roasted chicken. All seasoned and roasted in house.

Husband and wife managing this place for around 9 years. He kept the standards as good as before!
They don’t have fancy pratas like all the fusion ones. Only good ol’ traditional ones. Love a plain and egg prata anytime man.
Only regulars would know, this is called Zong Tong Peng. Try to know!

香记鸡饭 (Xiangji Chicken Rice) – Toa Payoh, Singapore

Hey y’all!

Haven’t been writing for the past 2 days as I was super busy packing all my stuffs for my move later today. Yes, I’ll be moving back from Shenzhen back to my homeland Singapore! I dunno if it’s a good thing (Cos there’s so much good food & hazardous for my diet!) but it’s always a good thing to be near family and friends. Will be embarking in a new company dealing with F&B distribution. Will keep you guys posted! Anyways I’m about 95% packed and ready for the movers to swarm in after 2pm! Anyways, am really looking forward to going home… not the unpacking though… >_<

Ok back to food. I was in Toa Payoh during my last trip back and found this pretty awesome chicken rice stall at a coffee shop. Surprisingly, I couldn’t find any review on this stall! But to the peeps living around that area, they know that this chicken rice is blardy good and long queue during peak hours! So I decided I should try it since I haven’t had my lunch. Check out my review below:

The stall at the corner of the coffeeshop
Ordered roast chicken with roast pork and an egg for S$5.
Skin of the chicken was nice with slight crisp and so was the roast pork. It was 3pm, so slight crisp is already pretty good. Can’t imagine when it’s piping hot.
Rice was cook to perfection. Grainy and yet with the right moist. Normally with rice like that I would go for 2 or 3 bowls… but, I’m in control now… ;P

Overall Rating: 4/5. I wanted to try the steam chicken but they ran out of it. But roast chicken was good, with tasty rice and chilli sauce to go with it. Go try it!

East Coast Lagoon (东海岸) – Shanghai, China

From the name you know it’s somewhat related to Singapore cuisine. This place took over the previous Lau Pa Sak restaurant and started not too long ago. I was there to have some Singapore food but realized they changed hands. Nevertheless, it’s still Singapore food! But isn’t 东海岸 known as East Coast Park? Hmmm…

Elongated space.

Coffee Davidoff RMB22 – Very strong black coffee which I like. 🙂
Curry Puff RMB8 – Not nice. Pastry too thick and unlike Old Chang Kee’s pastry texture. However, the curry inside is really good! Hence wasted, it could be a lot better if the pastry was better.
Braised Duck Rice RMB35 – Duck meat was pretty ok and gave quite a lot. Yam rice was really good. Soup is clear and boiled with anchovies.
BBQ Sambal Mackerel RMB28 – I wanted to eat some fish as fish has a lot of bones in Shanghai and Jiangsu Province. Thought the fish would be small but no! It’s quite big and I had difficulty finishing it! Nicely charred on the skin and loads of sambal applied inside. See pic below.
Loads of sambal inside. Nice and spicy!
Just to show you how big the fish was.
On the flip side, also a lot of sambal rubbed inside the slit. Awesome!
Bill of RMB93. Very affordable. Will be back.

Rating: 4.5/5.

Taste: Pretty close to home and love the fish!

Portion: Above average.

Service: Not enthusiastic. Must remind them to top up water even though I placed the empty cup beside the aisle.

Ambience: Comfy and you won’t come out smelling like what  you ate.

Price: RMB93 in total. Around S$19.50.

RTE: I’ll probably would if I’m in Shanghai again! Haven’t try all their extensive menu offerings!
