Sun Dance – Xiamen, Guangdong, China

This last entry wraps up my write ups for Xiamen good foods. Too much to eat, too small stomach! Will definitely be back! Anyways, came to know about this place as it’s much talked about in Xiamen. So I decided to check this place out for lunch before I head back. Went in the place, pretty empty on a weekend lunch, found a table near the door as I had my luggage with me. And boy did I regret that. It was warm near the door and the air-condition was not strong enough during summer. Nevertheless I placed my orders … Continue reading Sun Dance – Xiamen, Guangdong, China

Gulangyu, Xiamen, China

After the wonderful experience at the coffee place of 褚家园咖啡馆, I walked through the back alleys to discover many nice B&Bs and more street food. But I was pretty locked in to try one of the famous oyster omelette in Xiamen, hence skipped the rest. Oyster Omelette is pretty well known in Guangdong, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. It’s a lovely fried plate of sweet potato flour with eggs and of course, oysters. The locals in Xiamen call these oyster omelettes 海蛎煎(Hai Li), while in Taiwan it’s known as 蚝仔煎 (Orh Ah Jian), in Thailand it is known as Hoy Tod (But …

Gulangyu, Xiamen, China

Just up ahead of 沈家闽南肠粉 in my previous post, you’ll find this shop with long tradition for their fish and prawn balls. No much of a queue so I placed my order for the 丸子开会 for RMB20, which basically has 5pcs of the 黄金鱼丸 and 6pcs of the 秘制虾丸. My reviews as follows: Rating: 3.5/5. Taste: Taste is not bad. Balls are soft and not too salty. Soup has some dried shrimps and seaweed to enhance the taste but still bland. So maybe the soup is not meant for drinking? But I’ve tasted better. Hate to say this, the frozen ones from my supermarket …

Gulangyu, Xiamen, China

Gulangyu is a little island off Xiamen and a place for loads of good food… apart from sightseeing. So after arriving at the port of Gulangyu, we walked straight to the little shops where all the food are. 沈家闽南肠粉 is the first stop and the queue is always damn long. Just becareful when queuing up, there’ll be people pushing carts of goods going up the slope and they will just budge their way through. Be prepared to screw them! Anyways, pics below: Rating: 5/5. Taste: Really good! Very nice and soft texture, with egg, some minced pork and veg. Chilli is nice but …

Taiwan Food Street (台湾小吃街) – Xiamen, China

First time in Xiamen and totally excited over all the hype I got from my friends and documentaries about the food there. Fact is, because of it’s close proximity to Taiwan, you’ll find many similar food types to Taiwan over here. I was a little skeptical because I’ve been to Taipei and the food there is a little bland to my palate. Maybe also because I’m from Singapore, working in the APAC region for years, I have developed a stronger preference to my taste buds. However that said, I have been on a diet and have been taking lotsa bland … Continue reading Taiwan Food Street (台湾小吃街) – Xiamen, China

Guangzhou, China

This is a regular place I would go for my dim sum and my fix of siew yoke when in Guangzhou. Very popular with the locals and you can see from the crowd… they are crowded almost every hour from the time they are open in the morning for yum cha, lunch, then afternoon yum cha again, dinner, then evening yum cha again. Reason is the variety is there, food is good and nice, price is reasonable. Try it when you are in Guangzhou the next time, just be prepared to wait like an hour. Rating: 4.5/5. If not for …

If you are in Guangzhou and you would like to try something that locals have on daily basis, you might wanna check out this place. It’s famous among locals for its roast goose and it’s economical rice. Located just opposite Guangzhou Hotel, at Haizhu Square, the place is very easy to find as it’s along the main road. Rating: 4/5 Taste: Could be better but this is kind alike economical rice. So cannot compare with those retaurant type where you pay like RMB$88 for a small plate of meat. So to me, it’s good enough. Portion: Above average. Price: RMB$20 …
