Don Lechon – Geylang, Singapore

Advertisements

Wah writing on this is not gonna help my dieting plans but I had it weeks back and this is a sure winner with most of my foodie friends and readers here. Was invited to check out Don Lechon, located at the back of Grandlink Square which is not easy to spot unless you walk inwards, and I was quite impressed with the food and passion in it!

Lechon, which means ‘Roasted Suckling Pig’ in Spanish is of Spanish origins. As Phillipines used to be under the ruling of the Spaniards, there are many dishes in today’s Filipino cuisine that are of Spanish origin. I have always a keen interest to know more about Pinoy cuisine after being exposed to some of the dishes like Lechon, Chicken & Pork Adobo, Asado and confectionery from the famous Goldilocks, like Polvoron, Mamon and my favourite, Ensaymada… I love cheese and everyone knows! Haha…

Ok back to Don Lechon, this quaint eatery has already a following as around the area lives many fellow Filipinos and this is truly comfort food for them. While they can cook many other items at home like Sinigang (Sour soup) and Kare Kare (Meat Stew), but the use of lechon in them makes a smoky difference! Started by a native Pinoy, Kris, who was originally from Manila and have been in Singapore for more than 8 years already. Going into this food business have always been his passion and to be honest, the food is really yummy and they do have dishes for one pax to groups. So to my Pinoy friends and readers in Singapore, you prolly know about this place already but you may wanna visit them soon!

Eatery front
Chopped Lechon ($9.50). Crackling skin of a suckling pig, this is very close to our Chinese Sio Bak or even the suckling pig itself. Damn yummy!
Yummy Lechon
Sauces to go with your Chopped Lechon. The darker one is a little sourish which goes damn well with the crispy pork. The other one is made from blood, a little acquired for me.
Lechon Kare Kare($7.50). Lechon is used in this peanut based dish as a stew and goes damn well with rice. Traditionally there should be a lot of spare parts including feet of pigs and cows. Thank God this is Lechon. 😉
Lechon Sisig ($9.50) – My favourite dish by far cos of the lime and chilli peppers used inside. You definitely need a plate of white rice for this!
Lechon Sinigang ($11.50). Big portion for this and great for those who needs more food like me. Lechon chunks are used inside and really awesome with rice. Sourish and savoury, how can you go wrong with that?
Lechon Paksiw ($6.00). Paksiw to me is like a stew and in this case, lechon is used as the meat base and simmered with vinegar and perhaps fish sauce. Very appetising dish.
Bopis ($5.50). This beef lungs dish has Spanish origins. Actually quite nice and spicy, sauteed in onions, chillies and tomatoes. Again you need rice for this!
Interior. No seats. All dining outside the shop.
Kris and me. Wish him all the best in his business!

Rating: 5/5.

金海湾香港烧腊 – Geylang, Singapore

Discovered another hidden gem today while I was looking for undiscovered food places in Geylang area during lunch today. This whole coffeeshop belongs to one owner and apparently their curry rice is quite popular too. But let’s focus on the roast meat stall first. 😉

Stall within coffeeshop
Yummy roasted meats
See how much roasted meats on the rice!!!
Look at the well defined layers!

Taste:

Ordered my standard char siew and siew yoke rice as that is my benchmark to test for good roast meats. Siew yoke’s skin was crackling and the meat was tender while the char siew had lightly burnt ends and half fat proportions. Rice was little but I was ok with it as I didn’t wanna eat too much for lunch. The roast meats were charcoal roasted and really yummy. There goes my diet, damn.

$4.50

Hong Qin Fish And Duck Porridge (鸿勤鱼粥鸭粥) – Geylang, Singapore

Boss cooks the food himself inside
They have a variety of braised items too!

Braised Pork Leg! Yums!
I ordered fish slice with fried bones. If not the soup would be clearer. But still yummy!

Intro:
This is another hawker operating for prolly more than 20 years already. They used to be from the corner coffeeshop at the end of Lor 27 Geylang diagonally opposite Ho Kee Pau. I remember driving mum there to have our favourite fish soup and braised pork leg on weekends and usually the place will be packed with regulars. Moving to this current location may be a lot cleaner and neater, but rental is very high as I was told. Nevertheless I’m glad I found them through my staff Ray, and would like to introduce to you guys one of my top ranking fish soup places.

Taste:

They are those rice-with-soup porridge specialist. The soup looks clear and deceiving but their fresh sliced fish soup is so damn good, you’ll be hit by the yummy fish flavours once the soup touches your tongue! Check out their braised pork leg or braised duck also! Very nice with steam white rice!

From $4.

The Skewer Bar – Geylang, Singapore

You know most of the time we run out of choices for supper in Singapore and this is prolly a good place for such indulgence for your next supper outing. Was introduced to this little place by a friend and immediately it rekindled my years in China where you can find BBQs at every nooks and crannies in the neighbourhood.

Although they just started only like two months ago, I have since revisited them after they have renovated (expanded) but still most customers prefer to sit outside when they have a nice airconditioned room inside. On top of that, they even have crafted and draft beers now which of course is not offered by the coffee shop they are residing in.

The stall. To the left is the new wing.
The offerings. The team is working in new items soon to add on to the range.
One the partners is the main chef doing the BBQing.
A touch of passion & spice
These bacon with enoki or quails’ egg is so good!
BBQ Stingray with homemade sambal chilli. Not very spicy for me, but at least the fish is nice and fresh!
Somehow the mini Taiwanese sausages on the right is damn nice! The balls on the left are homemade chicken and pork balls. Very nice lightly grilled with teriyaki sauce.
Grilled Shitake & chicken liver
Electric stove also have fire one ok!
More orders of these damn blardy awesome pork skewers!
More orders of this homemade grandma’s recipe!
BBQ Eggplant is very nice especially with the shallots and garlic on top!

Rating: 5/5.

Taste: Love it! Especially the pork skewers and special pork & chicken balls! Not forgetting the bacon skewers!

Portion: Skewers lor.

Service: Very good especially when 4 partners are there to help out.

Ambience: The new aircon area is damn comfy lah in this blardy hot weather!

Happy Crab 蟹开心 – Geylang, Singapore

Advertisements

This place came highly recommended by a Singaporean friend base in Shenzhen also and I told myself I need to visit this place when I was back the last round. Happy Crab, as the name suggests, sells crabs and only crabs. Their crabs are specially ordered and all comes with thick, milky and sweet roe inside as you crack open (see pic below). However, they are just a stall within a coffee shop, hence you can also order from the tse char stall which apparently has damn awesome wings and sambal kang kong!

As you turn in from Lorong 33, the coffee shop on the right. (Left of pic)
Crab stall… Notice it’s that simple and they don’t display the crabs cos of freshness issue. See how many people order takeaways!
Back alley seating available but beware of cockroaches…
The crab is served! Not ideal for presentation but it’s a coffee shop! Served in 3 different types of dips; Wasabi, mayonnaise and sambal belachan. The sambal belachan, seriously, is damn awesome!
As you pry open the middle, the roe starts flowing… omg…
Juicy and tender flesh, BBQed to perfection!
Some crab species was given by supplier to the stall for them to try
Sample crab came on the house… didn’t look too good.
Sample crab’s flesh is a little too watery. Not suitable for BBQ and have feedbacked to the owner to stick to his usual crabs.
Tse char stall
Prawn Paste Chicken S$8 – Somehow they did this very well!
Sambal Kang Kong S$8 – The sambal is really good.
Fu Yong Omelette S$8 – With a lot of char siew and shrimps inside…
