POH CHAN KEE ROASTED – BUKIT MERAH, SINGAPORE

Tried this stall years ago before Alexandra Village Food Centre underwent some renovation. This food centre is definitely much more airy than previous. So does the taste of the roasted meats here. Roaster Owner Mr Chan somehow managed to catch the right mix of temperature, timing and volume to achieve the succulence in his roasted meats today. I definitely loved it.

First gen Mr Chan picked up roasting meats in the year 2005 and Poh Chan Kee Roasted after the renovation was set up mainly is for his old regular customers and also for his son to carry on the business. We wish him all the best!

What I like about this outlet is the perseverance of Mr Chan, believing in his own skills and products, which are giving him a lot of repeated customers. Even for myself, I have pre-ordered a roasted duck myself for the upcoming Chinese New Year! And also with a starting price of just $3, he is making his food affordable to the hood. So be sure to reserve your roasted meats earlier cos he has limited capacity for that day only! Contacts below!

18 SEAFOOD 食霸海鲜 – LOR LEW LIAN, SINGAPORE

YouTube – https://youtu.be/KcdJ8EHmQwA

Lorong Lew Lian is a very small estate area consisting of only 8 old HDB blocks and my aunty is living in one of them. So I kinda grew up in this area as I stayed with her during some holidays when I was growing up. To be honest, for the longest time, I don’t remember there are good food around this area. Usually mediocre options for the neighbourhood which you just eat and fill your stomach for that meal. Until 18 Seafood came along about 2 years back, changing the stereotypical Zichar stall expectations with very interesting Cantonese style cuisine and cooking methods.

What I like about this outlet is that the dishes are very creative but yet yummy. The Fried Mee Pok is prolly the only one in Singapore and is really yummy! I can eat that on a daily basis! The glutinous rice crispy chicken was delicious and a lot of work just to make it so crispy that you can cut by scissors! Another dish worth mentioning is definitely the Champagne Ribs. So well seasoned and juicy with every bite! The complimentary Pheonix Claws in Abalone Sauce was so well done my late Cantonese Grandma would love!

幸运板面鱼汤 – HOUGANG, SINGAPORE

Have been coming to this coffeeshop for the famous Fried Oyster and Char Kway Teow ever since they moved from the old wet market area at Hougang Ave 3. Haven’t really tried this Ban Mian stall so I decided to give the Ma La Ban Mian and fried gyoza a try. As you can see, she has a lot of variety so good luck making your choice for your meal!

What I like about this stall is that the lady manages it all by herself. From prepping, cooking, deep frying, taking orders, packing food, collect money, etc. I believe she was from China but has been here in SG very long already. Very friendly and accommodating.

AH PING TEOCHEW BRAISED DUCK/KWAY CHAP – BEDOK, SINGAPORE

This is the side of Bedok not many would pass by or visit. Or maybe it’s me cos I’ve never checked out this coffeeshop before. And some stalls open only in the afternoon for the dinner crowd. So I decided to pop by one afternoon to check out the place. Not many stalls were opened except this deliciously looking braised duck kway chap stall was open and decided to give it a try.

What I like about this stall is that Ah Ping manages it all by herself. From prepping, cooking, taking orders, packing food, collect money, etc. She took over the stall from her in-laws and when I was there, it was still under the old name, which I’ve already changed on Google Maps. I’ve also included her mobile number for pre-orders so you don’t have to wait too long. Kway Chap is tasty, no porky smell, not too salty, very balance. The kway as explained in video, was the thicker one. I prefer the finer one cos it’s smoother. But overall good pricing and yummy.

Yummy Innards! The quail’s egg is specially done for the kids!
Braised Boneless Duck
Lovely kway. Firm and don’t tear easily.

泉 QUAN NASI LEMAK ECONOMICAL BEEHOON – JALAN BATU, SINGAPORE

I dare you to ask for extra beehoon or mee and finish it alone in one sitting at this stall. For beehoon mee lovers like myself will love it. After writing about their kway chap neighbour in my previous post, this stall is a stall I can’t miss. Food wise not the best but good enough for me if I’m looking for a beehoon mee fix.

Stall Front
Not much stuff left cos it was 11am…
This weighed over half a kg and I believe it’s only $2+
Smaller packet but big enough portion for normal adult. $1+ only.

What I like about this stall is that the portions are HUGE!!! Just how huge you may ask… Let’s say if you tapao, the measurements would roughly be 20cm x 20cm x 10cm(H)! And on top of that, they are probably one of the cheapest around! The uncle in front of me bought beehoon with chicken wing and half a fishcake was only $1.70! Yes they can have half a ngoh hiang or chicken cutlet also. But cannot half egg lah, later aunty half you then you know 😜. Quan is definitely a hidden gem and one that helps the community by providing affordable food! Well done!

FENG JI KWAY CHAP – JALAN BATU, SINGAPORE

Feng Ji Kway Chap was discovered some years back when I was there at Jalan Batu Hawker Centre in search for my fav wanton noodles. But there was a long queue so I gave Feng Ji a try.

What I like about this stall is the friendly tattooed owner welding a chopper and his no nonsense lady partner who is there taking orders. The kway is exceptionally smooth and silky because he’s using the ultra thin one which is quite challenging as the cooking style is different and it breaks or becomes soggy easily. But his was perfect. And the innards have no porky smell, which appeals to even my fussy Diana. Paired with the vinegar based chilli sauce, yums. Best of all, the price at only $4.50 per standard set. Prolly one of the cheapest around.
