Hawkers who are relentless in their offerings always inspire me. Better still, fall, pick up and reinvent.
Kenny used to operate this stall as an Italian pasta place but realise the spending power in Ghim Moh is not high and as usual manpower is seriously hard to find. So he revamped the whole stall into a Herbal Soup stall and business definitely improved from what I witnessed. At least this stall, he can manage it himself.
Love the steam minced pork with pumpkin ($2.50), a different approach to the usual style. He also offers brown rice ($0.80) which was very apt for me. Soup wise is pleasant. Not as rich as what I’ve tried before but was good enough for the $4.50 price tag. Different soups have different purposes, so go try it and let me know if you liked it too.
We have zillions of such snack and kueh stores in the neighborhoods in Singapore but this one is a little more special. They actually have makeshift seats and tables for customers dining in. Chai Chee is not short of coffeeshops cos there are already 2 full sized ones round the corner but this one is always crowded. And I found out the reason why. See my food pic below for answer.
Taste: The fried beehoon and mee was good. Made me wanna eat more but my will power was stronger. Coffee lacks punch but it’s prolly only $1 or less. They have chee cheong fun, yam cake, carrot cake, lor mai kai, sometimes mee siam, etc. Neighbourhood gems like these keeps inflationary prices away. Love them!
Price: $3 with my kopi-c kosong.
Ambience: Messy. Eat house in a shop kinda concept.
This stall has been around ever since Shunfu Mart renovated. Moved from their origin place at Lakeview, this stall has quite a following. And I learnt that this uncle has been a hawker since he was 19 years old and now he’s 65. Respect. So I decided to give it a try by order both the prawn noodles and the fried prawn mee.
Price: $4 for fried, $3 for dry.
Ambience: Hawker Centre with very tight seating. My tummy was rubbing on the table.
Taste: Dry version has an old school taste to it with ketchup. Soup that came with it looked rich but tasted not too rich. I would prefer a little more umami richness to the broth cos that will affect the taste for the fried one as well. Fried one is well fried with the eggs fried in from the beginning to create the broth that simmers the noodles. By right the noodles should be good on its own but you need to mix in the sambal and squeeze the lime to get the taste they created.

This is truly a hidden gem tucked in between so many stalls with so many pictures of food hanging all over the place. Was here for lunch after doctor’s for Diana and I noticed this old uncle do not have that many orders like the other stalls in this coffeeshop. I told Diana that I had a feeling that the food might be good. So I approached the stall.
Mr Leong, the old uncle who retired being a crane operator is 77 years old this year and have been operating this stall for over a year. This is a very scary sight because at this age, he should be happily retired and living his life. There could be a lot of factors to consider but I’m leaning towards happy and positive thoughts… maybe his passion for cooking supersedes everything. So ya, here he is answering my questions and the first thing I asked him was,”Uncle, if I had to eat one thing, what would you recommend. He pointed the Penang Char Kway Teow. I told him ok let’s do it. $3 one plate. Reviews below:
Taste: No doubt about it, very close to authenticity. Not overly salty, flavour just right. Wok hei controlled well without the burnt taste. Even Diana said it was good!
Portion: Good size for $3!
RTE: Definitely! I got a feeling the Char Beehoon is also good!

Ghim Moh is a place less explored by me if not for my other half. We decided to try this stall one morning cos of it’s loud green signage shouting the Teochew out of me… (I’m half Teochew you see…)
Old Teochew is located towards the last second row in the middle of the food centre and they offer only 2 products; Mee Siam and Satay Beehoon. We were in the mood for Mee Siam so we ordered. I’ve tasted very good mee siams in my life, from traditional to modern fusion and this one looks legit. What adds to the anticipation was the aunty’s precision in prepping the order. Looks like an OCD to me haha… There was a short queue so had to wait a little and finally got the mee siam in 10-15mins.
Taste: Love the balance between the tanginess from the assam, the spiciness and also the nuttyness from the sauce. Yes, she adds grounded peanuts into the soup to give it more creaminess and aroma to the sauce. Super appetising, great for mornings!
Service: Self-Service. But they squeeze the lime for us… perfect for those who don’t wanna get their fingers dirty haha
Alright this was something I promised to review yesterday. Chanced upon this stall cos I was there for brekkie and picked mum up. A little rare to find Beef Noodle specialty stalls in neighbourhood coffee shops. Managed to speak to the boss cos I was the first customer and he mentioned that his soup base is using only pure beef and bones. True enough he scooped up and showed me. And it tasted like it too cos usually with MSG or the flavoured powder, I’ll get thirsty after half an hour. A hidden gem indeed.
Taste: Soup was really nice but not overly rich which usually is caused by adding those pre-mixes. The tendons were to die for! So soft and tender! Beef brisket could use a little more time as I prefer mine to be more tender. Tripe was shioks along with other items. Chilli wise they had chinchalok which I thought was pretty detailed. Thumbs up for the effort!
Portion: Pretty ok.
Price: $8. Not cheap but all clean foods are not cheap anyways haha!
Ambience: Renovated coffee shop.
RTE: Yes I would return to eat!

Wah writing on this is not gonna help my dieting plans but I had it weeks back and this is a sure winner with most of my foodie friends and readers here. Was invited to check out Don Lechon, located at the back of Grandlink Square which is not easy to spot unless you walk inwards, and I was quite impressed with the food and passion in it!
Lechon, which means ‘Roasted Suckling Pig’ in Spanish is of Spanish origins. As Phillipines used to be under the ruling of the Spaniards, there are many dishes in today’s Filipino cuisine that are of Spanish origin. I have always a keen interest to know more about Pinoy cuisine after being exposed to some of the dishes like Lechon, Chicken & Pork Adobo, Asado and confectionery from the famous Goldilocks, like Polvoron, Mamon and my favourite, Ensaymada… I love cheese and everyone knows! Haha…
Ok back to Don Lechon, this quaint eatery has already a following as around the area lives many fellow Filipinos and this is truly comfort food for them. While they can cook many other items at home like Sinigang (Sour soup) and Kare Kare (Meat Stew), but the use of lechon in them makes a smoky difference! Started by a native Pinoy, Kris, who was originally from Manila and have been in Singapore for more than 8 years already. Going into this food business have always been his passion and to be honest, the food is really yummy and they do have dishes for one pax to groups. So to my Pinoy friends and readers in Singapore, you prolly know about this place already but you may wanna visit them soon!
Taste: Pretty authentic. All the meat bases are of Lechon cos Filipinos do not waste their food. Extra food are usually used in other dishes so there is no wastage! You know it’s good when you can see so many Pinoys frequenting this place! Really love some of the dishes here and will be heading back for more soon!
Portion: Average. Please note that there are Rice Meals prices and Ala Carte prices. Ask if not sure.
Price: Affordable. Ate others before and pretty ex.
Ambience: Al Fresco under tents. There are mozzies so please be prepared.
