Product Review – MacDonald’s Durian Crunch McFlurry

Advertisements

Was in Genting recently and spotted this new flavour which for a durian fan is like a dream come true. So of course, I bought one cup to try. Not cheap, costed me RM$7.60 which equates to around S$3.00. Nevertheless, I still have to try it.

Review:

It is probably the worst McFlurry I’ve ever tasted. The durian sauce tasted so chemical, they should have used puree instead. At the same time, there was hardly any durian taste in it. The crunchy stuff is hard, totally don’t value add to the overall product. I’d rather they add cornflakes instead. Somehow I believe these decisions to launch such a product have not gone through any food consultancy, really bad call and a waste of my money. It was so bad, I took 2 scoops and left the cup there. Really Pui Chao Nua…

Ha you must be wondering this is a seafood place right? Maybe during the mornings but not afternoon onwards. This wet market turns into a fruits shop specialising in my favourite fruit, durian. Highly recommended by my friend Audrey, who loves durians as much as I do! And she lives at Telok Blangah! So must be good right??? As I’m typing this post, I am digging up my craving for durians yet again… See the pics below and you’ll know what I mean…

香港满记甜品 @ Haizhu, Guangzhou

Ok I know you must be thinking why should I review such a popular dessert chain of stores right? Reason is, what they have in HK is different from the ones in China. In fact they have some other interesting items which distinguish them from their HK parent chain of stores. I was putting up at Lido Hotel on Beijing Lu in Guangzhou last month and this dessert store is just downstairs! Apart from other many great food places lah…

The guy took out a ciggy to smoke and was asked to go out of the shop! LOL!

Very soft skin and lovely durian puree inside.

Baked sago custard on top and yam paste inside! Damn nice!

Rating: 4.5/5. Prices a tad too high.

Taste: Was really nice and addictive especially the durian thing… I had 2 servings!

Price: A bit on the high side but still affordable to us.

Portion: Below average for the price paid.

RTE: If I see them in Shenzhen, I might just pop by.

Location: This one is below Lido Hotel, Beijing Lu, Guangzhou. They have many branches in HK, SZ and GZ.

Ok it reads Fan How Tim Ban in Cantonese or in English, it means desserts after rice… or meals… It’s just opposite the famous B仔凉粉 but I heard the latter’s standards have dropped. So I tried this stall which is renown for their Durian Pancakes, super crowded and they occupy like so many shop houses along the road and behind… amazing business they have!

See how crowded the place is? Wah lau... business damn good...
Inside the shop... the guys inside the kitchen area were working non-stop and keeps churning out bowls and bowls of dessert!
Mixed Fruits Jelly (杂果凉粉) - Very refreshing. Basically it's just fresh fruits and jelly at the bottom. But it's nice lah. 🙂
Braised mid section wings... nice snack!
Chee Cheong Fun with fishballs... in curry sauce, sweet bean sauce and sesame sauce. Love this.
Durian Pancakes!!! The skin is super soft, the durian taste is power! Tasted like D24 inside! Love it! It was so good I ta pao 2 more packets. Each pack is HKD$28.
Fresh cream with durian paste... superb formula to gain weight but the taste is just so irresistible!!!
Address of the place from my takeaway bag...

Rating: 5/5

Taste: Most of the stuff we tried were good. Will try other stuff on my next trip there.

Portion: Average

Price: Total bill about HKD$100… including 3 packets of durian pancake for takeaway.

RTE: Yup!

Location: See last picture.

My Encounter With Durians In Shenzhen

Advertisements

Ok think most of my friends know that I love durians. So I was walking by the fruits stall the other day just below my apartment, I saw durians!!! So I bought one since I was craving for it and it costed me almost S$10 for one!

Check out the durian... looks good right? Looks like those bitter sweet durians we find in Singapore right?
It was good until I opened up the durian... see the colour... boring one half... Took a bite, boring one whole... No taste, no smell, not sweet, it's like eating raw tapioca!!! Wah lau eh!!! Pui!
Dunno why I did this... thought the other parts of the durian might taste better... but to my dismay... it sucks totally... This whole lot, down the rubbish bin...

So I wasted $10 on the lousy Thai durian… In Geylang buy the $1 ones I believe still a lot better than this… Now I really miss the durians back home…

Really pui chao nua… no more Thai durians for me unless I can taste it first! Pui!
