Category Archives: Wan Ton Mee

A traditional Canton noodle which is a meal on its own, topped with Char Siew (Roast pork), vegetables and Wan Tons (small meat dumplings). The noodles and sauce varies, hence I’m trying to find out which has the most authentic taste which I remember eating from the roadside push cart stall outside of my primary school, St Michael’s School in the 70’s.

Ordered a bunch of wanton noodles for staff and myself for lunch with boxes of frozen jiaozi and wantons for my soup or steamboat on some other days.

The noodles give me a nice home feel and very heart warming. Love the plump wantons filled with fried dried sole fish bits inside and chestnut. Yums! Only regret is I didn’t ask for more chillies and extra noodles! Oh and the Braised Chicken Feet is super soft and tender! Must order!

Heard Aunty wakes up at 2am to go to the market to prepare for the day and start selling from 6am all the way till 1pm! Check them out at the link below and place your orders there to support local and hawkers ya!

麵記食閣 – Hougang, Singapore

Sorry for not writing much lately cos most quick updates are done on my Instagram account @eatwithroy. You guys can follow me there too. Work has been tiring cos a lot of stuffs to do at the beginning and hope operations will smooth out soon.

Wanted a nice local brekkie yesterday and I thought I should visit a coffeeshop which I haven't visited for the longest time. The coffeeshop has renovated and there are many stalls there now with pretty impressive offerings. However, they have adopted the self-service mode and everyone has to queue to get their food. Gone are the days when you can order and find a seat. So it's quite tough for one person to find a seat during peak periods, hence have to share table. I waited for like 15 mins as there were some orders before me:

Rate: 4.5/5.

Taste: Got the old school taste and although it looks plain, it's very tasty! Love the suppleness of the noodles. Damn yums!

Portion: $4 portion is good.

Service: Self service

Ambience: Coffeeshop

Price: $3 or $4

RTE: Definitely

Location: 703 Hougang Ave 2, MTF Coffeeshop

Angmoh Noodle House 红毛面家 – Joo Chiat, Singapore

Advertisements

If I don’t work around Changi Road, I wouldn’t have ventured around the area one afternoon on my off day and I wouldn’t have come across this Angmoh Noodle House along Joo Chiat Road. This noodle house has created a buzz some time mid 2012 when the lady boss has decided to stop her business due to poor health and 2 of her regulars and big fans, (who were also her landlords), decided to buy over the business so that they can continue to have their favorite wanton noodles! (These are hardcore foodies man!!!)

Founded in the 60s, this stall is started by a guy named Ao Yang, who has features and complexion of a Caucasian. Hence customers started naming the place as Angmoh Noodle House or Hong Mao Mian Jia in Chinese.

So how does it taste after their takeover? I can’t make any comparison because I have not tried the original lady boss’s one. But, read my reviews below nevertheless:

My order of small plate of wanton noodles $3.50.

Rating: 5/5.

Taste: I was actually quite surprise with the taste of this noodle! It actually has the traditional taste or what we refer as 古早 taste. The younger generation may not know this taste as most wanton noodle places these days do not use cooked oil (熟油 in Cantonese. Ask your parents or grandparents, they may know!) in their noodles anymore. Love the taste, love the springy noodle texture, soup was peppery and so were the wantons. Wantons also have an authentic taste which I have childhood memories of. Didn’t try the rest on the menu because I was having this in between main meals. 😉

Portion: Average

Service: Average

Ambience: Fan, partial aircon, coffeeshop style.

RTE: Definitely!!!

Price: $3.50. Should have ordered the $4.50 plate!!!

Location: 182 Joo Chiat Road. Opening hours: Daily 7am to 8pm. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AngMohWantonNoodle

Wonton Noodles @ BB 289 Food House – Bukit Batok, Singapore

Advertisements

Haha finally I write something in the west of Singapore. ;P I was around here doing deliveries in my last job so found this place where I can park and eat. This is a very neighbourhood place, housed beside a multi-storey carpark and beside a 7-Eleven. Think only the people who lives around there knows about this pretty awesome wonton noodle shop.

The name of the coffee shop

The store

My plate of noodles.

Wonton soup that comes with the noodles

Rating: 4.5/5.

Taste: They use the dark sauce type so I reckon it’s a little Malaysian style. Noodles were really nice and springy, char siew was roasted in house, and the wontons were lovely. Non Halal.

Portion: Average

Service: Couple running the stall. The lady is very nice and sweet. While the hubby cooks.

Ambience: Quiet during lunch time maybe because it’s located in the neighbourhood.

Price: I ordered a $4 portion. Normal portion is $3.

RTE: I would if I’m ever around there again!

Location: The name of the coffeeshop suggested it all. Block 289H, Bukit Batok Street 25, Singapore 657289. Normal coffee shop hours.
