海鲜之家 (Seafood House) – Eunos, Singapore

Advertisements

Alright I’m attempting to write my blogs on the bus again. Can only do it when the bus is not so crowded or else very hard to use 2 thumbs.

海鲜之家 or Seafood House in direct translation, is a recent stall at Eunos Hawker Centre which I’ve discovered. Reason is because they opened till 10pm, a time which I can meet after closing the cafe. Stall is owner by a PRC lady who have been living here for the past decade and her hubby is a Singaporean. She goes to buy her fish daily from the market and occasional you may get some premium fish… Just like some single origin coffee beans haha. Heard it’s long queue during peak hours which I doubt I’ll get to see. Anyways check out the pics below:

Stall front

This was the premium fish order which was red snapper. Paid $8 for this bowl.

See the red snapper fillets. no regrets ordering this!

This was another time when i ordered the regular mackerel fish for $3.50 plus rice $0.50. Fish was very fresh and reasonably portioned.

This was the mixed seafood order whichis $5.00 per bowl. loads of seafood!

well well well there were 2 scallops!!!

And loads of seafood!!!

They use the 扁鱼 to flavour the soup

As usual, clean plate/bowl . #cleanplate

Rating: 4.5/5.

Taste: Fish and seafood are fresh and very tasty. My comfort food after a long tiring day!

Portion: Average.

Service: Self-service

Ambience: Hawker centre with large fans

Price: Reasonable

RTE: Many times already 🙂

Location: #01-38 Eunos Hawker Centre. Facing opposite side of MRT tracks. Opens from 10am to 10pm.

[Media Invite] The Manhattan FISH MARKET – Marina Square, Singapore

Advertisements

Wow I didn’t know time past by so quickly. It has been almost 6 months since I’ve last reviewed on The Manhattan FISH MARKET (MFM). You can read about the previous blog entry here (http://eatwithroy.com/2014/11/12/the-manhattan-fish-market-kallang-singapore/). Anyways was recently at another new launch of MFM and this time they launched A Beefier Catch, which features 4 new beef and reef entrees, in an effort to spruce up the older menu and gearing up to the coming Mothers’ Day. Check out the new dishes below:

Oven Baked Beef Rib & Grilled Ocean Perch ($25.95) – The beef rib is marinated with many herbs and spices like rosemary, thyme, oregano, garlic, french mustard, etc. and served with homemade brown sauce with black pepper. The Perch is lightly seasoned and grilled and served with salad on the sides. This entree is definitely for those with a bigger appetite. Rib can be a little more tender though.
Flaming the prawns before serving…
Before serving this Oven Baked Beef Rib & Flaming Prawns ($23.95). Same beef rib as above, prawns are fresh and sweet.
Handmade Beef Patty & Bouillabaisse ($16.95). Juicy marinated beef patty sitting on half an oregano bun, which simulated an island. Beef patty was a little salty for me, which I have feedbacked on. The ‘island’ is surrounded in a sea of lovely broth of squid, mussels and Dory fish. This is perhaps my favourite for the night and mum would love this.
Handmade Beef Patty & Tempura Prawns ($15.95). Same beef patty as the above, love the prawns with tangy sauce which I ate separately on its own first.
Manhattan Flaming Seafood Platter ($38.95-$43.95). Price differs from the type of fish you choose. But it will be accompanied by oysters, calamari, battered fish fillets. A definite must-order sharing entree for seafood lovers!
Manhattan Mud Pie ($5.95) – Gooey choc ice cream with Oreo choc crust drizzled with rich choc sauce. Definitely the better dessert selection.
Sizzling Banana Fritters with Ice Cream ($7.95) – Hot plate, crispy bananas, ice cream on top and poured over with coconut cream. Then watch it sizzle right in front of your eyes. 🙂 Great way to end the night.

Overall Review:

Without a doubt, MFM is definitely good with their seafood and I just love the freshness. Having beef option as a promotion is a refreshing idea but I wish they would not lose focus in what they do best, which is seafood. Nevertheless, the event was great, food was good and service was excellent. Go try their Beef & Reef promotion from now till 31st May 2015 at any of their 16 outlets Singapore-wide. [MEDIA INVITE] House Of Peranakan Petit – Tiong Bahru, Singapore

Advertisements

House of Peranakan Petit is the latest addition not only to the House of Peranakan Group of Restaurants (www.houseofperanakan.com.sg) but also to the ever so popular Tiong Bahru region. Located at Eng Hoon Street, this little (no puns intended) 30-seater modern Peranakan restaurant is set to bring heritage food to an area surrounded by hipster cafes.

So a group of us bloggers and influencers are invited a couple of nights ago to sample some of their signature dishes and boy, they were awesome! Check out the pics below with comments and if you’re on instagram, check out hashtags #houseofperanakan and #houseofperanakanpetit for pics and comments by our foodie friends! You can also read the review for their main branch at Frankel Avenue here –> http://eatwithroy.com/2014/11/17/house-of-peranakan-cuisine-frankel-avenue-singapore/

Ambience

Frontage
Coming through the door
Petit it may be, but very cozy, painted in Peranakan green.
From the opposite side

Appetizers

Ginger Lemongrass or Pandan Tea ($5) – Very refreshing drinks to go with your food. Try the Lychee Tea (Not in pic) too on your second round like I did!
Cnodiments of sambal chilli and cinchalok to make your food tastier.
Ngoh Hiang ($12) – Very juicy minced pork, prawns, turnip, water chestnut and onions combi to make this dish a popular starter dish as well as takeaway to stock up at your home’s freezer!
Bob’s Pork Bun ($10 for 2pcs) – Another special dish for House of Peranakan Petit which is aka kong bak pau. The pork belly was so soaked up in the braised sauce that after the first bite, all of us fell in love with it! I was hoping for more actually! ;P
Otak Otak ($12) – This deep dish otak otak consist of more than 20 secret ingredients which Uncle Bob refuse to divulge even if I guessed correctly 10. Amazing dish!

Mains

Ayam Buah Keluak ($18) – Definitely one of the signature dishes here and a must-order for Peranakan food. A very tedious dish because of all tthe cleaning of the Indonesian black nut, digging out the insides of the nut, filling it back with the fillings fried with rempah of 7 ingredients which takes half a day to fry. General consensus was that this dish is a lot more tasty and flavourful than most places. Definitely a must-order here.
Scallops Lemak ($28) – This is currently only available at this outlet and was definitely a hit with the foodies. Fresh Japanese scallops cooked to perfection and douse in creamy peranakan lemak style. As mentioned on my instagram, I wallop the lettuce below as well cos they were soaked in the amazing sauce!
Sambal Fish ($16) – Fresh Selar fish fried till crispy with slit sides for rempah stuffings. The chilli sauce on top was so good that we were hoping House of Peranakan will bottle them and retail soon!
Babi Assam ($16) – An unique dish of pork belly with belimbing (sour fruit), beanpaste and spices, probably only available in House of Peranakan restaurants in Singapore. This dish apparently caught the attention of New Zealand’s Masterchef winner, Brett McGregor and he came all the way to Singapore just to learn from Bob, the boss of House of Peranakan! Love the tangy taste with the spices all in play. Yummy!

Dessert

Gula Melaka Sago Pudding ($6.50) – Picture this… crafted exclusive coconut ice cream over soft and fragrant sago pudding, drizzled over with rich gula melaka. Continue to salivate…
Durian Chendol ($8.50) is also served with the crafted coconut ice cream and gula melaka sauce with a serving of lovely durian paste! Yums!
Pulut Hitam ($4.50) – Presented in coconut milk art and cooked to perfection. Hands are not mine but nice right? (Hands credit @msoinkee)
Ubi Kayu ($6) – Lovely tender tapioca balls coated with grated coconut and the right amount of sugar. I realised this is not very sweet which is awesome! No the hands are still not mine.

Seafood Kitchen – Pasir Ris, Singapore

Advertisements

Celebrated my mother’s birthday recently at this place together with my brother’s family. Been here only once and this visit was only the second time. It has been around for a very long time and each time I come, it is always so crowded. This stall is actually within a food court and during dinner times, usually the crowd is there for the tse char only. Check out the yummy pics and comments below:

Entrance to the food court… there there my mummy in front!
This is at 6pm and the crowd is already there…
Asians love a plate of greens to go with their super duper meaty and oily dishes… $10
Minced Prawn Fritter (虾枣) $12 – This one is pretty good. Loads of filling inside.
Pork Ribs King $12 – Quite standard but still good.
Kampong Chicken Half $12 – Very rare you see tse char stall selling kampong chicken like that. Pretty good!
Cereal Prawn $25 – Delicious and a lot. One of the must order.
Homemade Beancurd $12 – Another of their specialty and also a must-order!

Rating: 5/5.

Taste: Yummy and good.

Portion: Slightly above average.

Service: Not too bad, even when it’s crowded.

Ambience: Food got has aircon, that’s all that matters… ;P

Price: Total damage was only $91.50 for 4 adults and 3 kids. Very reasonable. Cash only.

RTE: Definitely!

Happy Crab 蟹开心 – Geylang, Singapore

Advertisements

This place came highly recommended by a Singaporean friend base in Shenzhen also and I told myself I need to visit this place when I was back the last round. Happy Crab, as the name suggests, sells crabs and only crabs. Their crabs are specially ordered and all comes with thick, milky and sweet roe inside as you crack open (see pic below). However, they are just a stall within a coffee shop, hence you can also order from the tse char stall which apparently has damn awesome wings and sambal kang kong!

As you turn in from Lorong 33, the coffee shop on the right. (Left of pic)
Crab stall… Notice it’s that simple and they don’t display the crabs cos of freshness issue. See how many people order takeaways!
Back alley seating available but beware of cockroaches…
The crab is served! Not ideal for presentation but it’s a coffee shop! Served in 3 different types of dips; Wasabi, mayonnaise and sambal belachan. The sambal belachan, seriously, is damn awesome!
As you pry open the middle, the roe starts flowing… omg…
Juicy and tender flesh, BBQed to perfection!
Some crab species was given by supplier to the stall for them to try
Sample crab came on the house… didn’t look too good.
Sample crab’s flesh is a little too watery. Not suitable for BBQ and have feedbacked to the owner to stick to his usual crabs.
Tse char stall
Prawn Paste Chicken S$8 – Somehow they did this very well!
Sambal Kang Kong S$8 – The sambal is really good.
Fu Yong Omelette S$8 – With a lot of char siew and shrimps inside…

Rating: 5/5.

Taste: 5/5. Freshness at its best!

Portion: NA. Depending on how big you order.

Service: 5/5. Uncle is very friendly on phone when you place your advance order (one day)

Ambience: 3/5. Coffee shop, don’t expect much.

Price: Large one costed me S$30.

RTE: Yes definitely, writing this entry is making me craving for it in China!

Location: 641 Geylang Road (Lor 33). Tel: 96188713 (Peter Ang) One day advance order.
