BOH GEH UNCLE CANTEEN – SELETAR, SINGAPORE

Advertisements

A popular place for those working around that Seletar area, cab and Grab Drivers and apparently also to those who are doing their round island cycling. A really run down canteen with a kampong feel and only 3 stalls; Malay, Chinese and drinks. The Malay stall sells Nasi Lemak, Nasi Padang, Mee Siam, etc, dishes while the Chinese one is your usual Economical Rice stall. The drinks stall is managed by the owner himself with 2 lady generals making sure no one snaps photos of the premises and the food you paid for, which I thought was rather weird cos the other 2 stalls definitely need more publicity. Well, uncle must have his reasons lah.

What I like about this place is that the prices remain the same like in the 80s… Just like the ambience of this canteen, time came to a standstill. Don’t expect very nice hawker food here but they are very affordable which I feel is what keeping the lower income workers going.

Go check it out and let me know if you like this place too by commenting below! Please remember to subscribe and like my YouTube channel, IG and FB (@eatwithroy) page that I can reach out more to help the hawkers and small business community! Stay tuned for my next yummy video! 

老潮州 (Old Teochew) – Ghim Moh, Singapore

Advertisements

Ghim Moh is a place less explored by me if not for my other half. We decided to try this stall one morning cos of it’s loud green signage shouting the Teochew out of me… (I’m half Teochew you see…)

Old Teochew is located towards the last second row in the middle of the food centre and they offer only 2 products; Mee Siam and Satay Beehoon. We were in the mood for Mee Siam so we ordered. I’ve tasted very good mee siams in my life, from traditional to modern fusion and this one looks legit. What adds to the anticipation was the aunty’s precision in prepping the order. Looks like an OCD to me haha… There was a short queue so had to wait a little and finally got the mee siam in 10-15mins.

Glorious Mee Siam

The chilli is the bomb and I love chives with mee siam

They also added this crispy shrimps which adds on to the overall umami flavours.

The secret of the yummy Mee Siam… The Sauce!

Stall Front

Plates standing by for slams

Rating: 4.5/5.

Taste: Love the balance between the tanginess from the assam, the spiciness and also the nuttyness from the sauce. Yes, she adds grounded peanuts into the soup to give it more creaminess and aroma to the sauce. Super appetising, great for mornings!

Portion: Average.

Service: Self-Service. But they squeeze the lime for us… perfect for those who don’t wanna get their fingers dirty haha

Ambience: Hawker Centre

Price: $3… They got PayLah!

RTE: Twice so far!
