Fishball & Noodles. Taste varies from stalls to stalls…

What I Ate At Commonwealth Crescent Hawker Centre

Checked out this market today and was told by Diana there are many old school stalls still here. Well yes that’s true and along these stalls came with their attitude. Saw a stall @hammees_sg which is prolly the only stall that is hipster but was told the wait was gonna be 1 hour 40mins. So ya, #okthanksbye.

Tried Hong Kee Porridge, not bad, liver a little bloody though.

The Bak Chor Mee was good, from another stall, forgot the name.

The pork balls noodles was a little bland but the minced pork balls were nice!

Then of course the famous dessert stall, very traditional until no iced versions. Yeah I had my cheng tng hot… Go support local ya!

汕源鱼圆肉脞面 (San Yuan Gourmet) – Ang Mo Kio, Singapore

Was told that this is a 24hrs stall and I decided to check it out since I was around the area. Wasn’t difficult to find them, just have to listen out for ladle-clanging-on-porcelain-bowl sound and you’ll find them.

Naturally when I was there, there’s a queue. I dunno if the queue was there because the noodles are damn good or it’s because it’s the only noodle stall there 24hrs? Only way is to find out.

Long queue lah…

My bowl of Bak Chor Mee $3

Interesting they have crispy ikan bilis inside. Adds to the flavours.

Fishball soup $2

Rating: 4.5/5.

Taste: Really like the taste of the noodles but I found the noodles were a little soggy for me. The pork lard bits were crispy and burst in my mouth. The addition of ikan bilis was a final touch to the whole awesome taste. Pork and liver were very fresh and cooked to perfection without blood sightings. Fishballs were smooth and springy type. Overall was good.

Portion: Good portions.

Service: Self-service.

Ambience: Hawker centre, very dim lighting, dirty tables cos no cleaners at night.

Price: $3 for noodles, $2 for fishballs soup

RTE: I might… cos there’s a 24hrs Giant supermarket and bakery there catered for people like me.

Location: 527 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10 #01-148

没问题什锦肉脞面 (Assorted Minced Meat Noodles) – Compassvale, Singapore

Was taking a break the other day and came across this food court. As there were nothing much that interest me, I decide to give this minced pork noodles a try.

Secret to great tasting noodles!

The bowl of goodness comes with 2 very fresh shrimps, sliced fishcake, 2 fishballs, pork slices and pork lard. The noodles are very different; eggy, supple, and very yummy. Not your regular alkaline tasting HK noodles. Really love the texture of it! Fishballs are really nice and soft too!

$3.50 (Noodles), $3 (Fishball soup 8 balls)

Waiting Time:

5-10 mins.

文華鱼圆面 (Wen Hua Fishball Noodles) – Eunos, Singapore

Ok this stall is interesting to write on. Reason is, I don’t find it super tasty at all. So why am I writing about it then? The fact remains that it’s doing very well not just for lunch but also during breakfasts. So I don’t know what’s the draw factor here. Maybe it’s the only fishball noodle stall within the next 300m radius? Or is it because the customers here are familiar with the taste already? Or is there something special about their chilli paste? You be the judge if you’re in this area. So far another friend ate it too and said same thing, nothing special. I ate 4 times already, still yet to discover the ‘wow’ factor.

The coffee shop frontage

The simple stall within the coffee shop

My upsized bowl of wrong noodles… 😓

The well oiled noodles 😝

Ok the pork balls are prolly from the same supplier as the bak chor mee stall at 85 Bedok. There are minced flat fish inside. Which makes this noodle special? hmmm…

Rating: 3/5.

Taste:  Really nothing special. I must admit the noodles were well oiled by lard. It’s almost bland but I notice the chilli is made from dried chilli type, which makes it more spicy than usual. I had to empty the little saucer of soy sauce chilli into the noodles then it’s just nice. But overall it’s edible.

Portion: Below average. Mine already added noodles still so small portion.

Service: Lady who takes orders always screws up my orders. In the picture I order Mee Kia (fine noodles) but came Mee Poh (flat noodles) instead. Asked for more vinegar, it tasted normal. Some more she confirmed twice with me… Amazing…

Ambience: Coffee Shop

Price: Base price $3.00. Add additional noodles $0.50. Add additional ingredients $1.00.

RTE: Kept trying this place and they are very consistent… Consistently nothing special. 😝

Location: 132 Changi Road. Morning and lunch only.  Closed on Sundays.

Li Xin Fishball Noodles – Tai Seng, Singapore

Having my dinner here just and decided to write this post on the spot. The Fishballs here are really nice and soft so here goes my reviews:

Rating: 4/5. Non-Halal

Taste: Fishballs damn nice and soft. Noodles on the other hand is cooked to very soggy. Don’t really like the texture, not springy at all. But the crispy lard chunks are really nice.

Portion: Below average.

Service: Could be better

Ambience: Within Food Republic, Aircon food court. The tables in between Toast Box and Food Republic has a bad foul smell from the rubbish bins.

Price: $4.00 noodles with 5 Fishballs

RTE: Yeah when I have the craving.

Location: BreadTalk IHQ at Tai Seng

Yong Seng Teochew Fishball Noodle @ 105 Hougang Avenue 1

At my favourite place again for my usual lor mee or fried hokkien mee, noticed that this stall of fishball noodles always have a queue and always closes before 2pm. So my mum went to queue for it. Queue was pretty fast for about 5-10mins.

The stall and the queue...

Quite a lot of ingredients and noodles. For only $2.70 per bowl! Wow!

Rating: 5/5.

Taste: One of the best Bak Chor Mee I’ve tasted so far. The broth is damn solid and the taste of the noodles is just perfect. Now I understand why the long queue everytime!

Portion: Above average

Price: $2.70 per bowl. If pack it’s $3.00 I think.

RTE: Yuppers!

Location: Block 105 Hougang Avenue 1 #02-39. Usually runs out by 2pm.

好面家 @112 Bishan St 11

Was back here again to try their other foodstuff. Stomach wasn’t feeling that good so cannot have anything curry… so I decided to try the noodles. Ordered a 小碗面which basically is a bowl of noodles of your choice with a bowl of soup with ingredients. I didn’t tell her to add more noodles as my stomach was not feeling that well but she did it anyway… I guess SIZE really does matter! ;P

The stall... not very clear cos taken from my N95...

There, the big bowl of noodles with with boiling soup...

Tasty mushroom sauce and it taste better with loads of black chinese vinegar.

Soup with a lot of ingredients. Don't look very nice because of the egg inside... but it's tasty and MSG is kept to the minimum.

Rating: 4.5/5

Taste: Nicer than expected. 🙂 Should try their curry chicken noodles also!

Portion: Above average.

Price: $4.00 only.

RTE: Yes if around that area and when craving for noodles!

Location: Block 112 coffeeshop (the tandoori stall is just beside it…)
