Bakerz@Work – Macpherson, Singapore

I discovered this place recently near where I work and I believe it commenced business not too long ago. Located just below Citimac Industrial Complex, opposite the huge Cross of Trinity Church, this bakery cafe shop is quite a saviour for me especially when I need my fix of caffeine at the end of a busy day.

This place has not just gourmet coffees but also crafted breads and cakes for customers. On top of that, they have a good range of baking equipment for sale in their little shop. Further in, there is a room for baking workshops that can fit easily 20 pax.

Chef De Boulanger William Woo conducts such classes and he is also one of the owners for this place. Chef Woo is from Penang, Malaysia, and has a long work history in F&B and baking. His deep passion (just like me for food & coffee!) is then realised in Singapore after setting up Bakers@Work to let more people try his breads and teach them how to bake at home. Despite the high rentals, he is persevering to brand Bakers@Work as a quality baking school/cafe/shop at reasonable prices. Check out the pics below:

Rating: 4.5/5.

Taste: Latte was good, espresso was pretty well extracted. Cakes are definitely good, that’s their forte isn’t it? Bought a pumpkin loaf before, damn awesome. Lunch they have sandwiches/paninis etc. with cured meats and veg.

Portion: Average.

Service: Pretty good.

Ambience: Not a full cafe with only around 4 round tables and some bar stools but comfy. I caught up with some colleagues here over coffee and cakes one evening.

Price: $4.50 for latte and $4 for cake slice. Prices differs from types of cakes.

I was in Hong Kong for a meeting and was looking for a place for a quick lunch when I chanced upon this little cafe. I found it unique cos the shop is actually located underground of a building in TST.

Then I saw that they are being featured for the best 15 cafes in Hong Kong, then I know I’m at the right place.

Then I went in and found a table at a very nice corner. As I usually eat late, hence the place was empty.

I ordered my lunch like most Hong Kongers do, the sets are usually value for money. Hence I ordered the set of soup, spaghetti and latte for HKD$70.

The soup to be honest are similar to Campbell’s but the spaghetti is pretty good. Looks simple and plain but taste ok. Most importantly, the salmon didn’t stink. Latte is pretty good, nutty flavour, medium bold and served at the temperature of my liking… hot.

The cafe do have sets for afternoon teas as well.

Afternoon tea sets available… time to change their menus, so old.

For HKD$70 (SGD$11), definitely worth it and even cheaper than Singapore. If you’re around that area you can pop by and check this place out!

開心小敘 – Yuen Long, Hong Kong

This is a little shop located in the heartlands of Yuen Long in Hong Kong and not known to tourists obviously. More known to the neighbourhood only, this place is always packed with customers from noon till 3-4pm and dinner as well. See my video and review below!

Overall Rating: 5/5. Good price at HK$33 for the rice with the double eggs. Love the curry, at least it’s not sweet, and good curry taste. Pork chops are juicy and good portioning. Their portioning used to be a lot bigger, but this is still quite substantial for a normal person. They are famous for their soy sauce gravy also instead of curry. You can check them out!

Friends Cafe 有情有意 – Hung Hom, Hong Kong

Like I said I have loads of backlogs but I have lined them up to write on them. This one is a cafe worth mentioning as they hire the deaf & mute as service staff. This cafe works with the association in HK for the Deaf & Mute for this trial project of getting the physically impaired locals to be hired in the F&B environment. I was fortunate to be introduced to the boss of the cafe who apparently also owns GoFun Rewards in HK & China (http://www.gofun.com/hk/index.php).

The cafe is situated at the mall beside the Hung Hom train station that goes direct to Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Located at a corner on the 7th floor, the cafe didn’t look like a good place for meals. But when I got seated, I was in awe for the fact that the service staff were all deaf & mute. And the cafe was catered for the ease of ordering by their customers and food is served piping hot and up to standard. I truly respect organizations giving back to society in anyway and this cafe has won my respect truly.
