WINE FIESTA 21-23 OCT 2016 – CLIFFORD SQUARE, SINGAPORE

Attended the first day of Wine Fiesta 2016 today held at Clifford Square and this year’s theme “Rising Roots” focuses on eco-conscious wine makers producing wines naturally. The event also features more than 70 winemakers worldwide with more than 350 wine labels.

I was also invited for the special wine pairing segment featuring 4 labels from the exhibitors and awesome bites from Chef Dave of Burnt Ends.

First up was the Scallop and Zest pairing with CRFT Gruner Veltliner Longview Vineyard 2015. The scallops were definitely a great way to start the pairing being tangy and savoury at the same time. The white brought out the lovely flavours on it’s own, a fruity explosion.
Kingfish and Miso in a sort of like taco wrap, definitely blew me off. The fish was so well done and so flavourful, I wished I had another serving of it! Paired with the Rose 2016 from BK Wines, gave a sweet note to wrap up the wrap-full of goodness.
Jamaican Chicken next and it was SO FREAKIN’ GOOD! Love this chicken totally with a lovely lime tangy finish. Wine’s from Lucy M Noire de Florette 2016. A little more character which is prolly why paired with such a heavy flavoured dish.
Burnt Onion and Bresaola Tart next and the tart was bursting with onion fragrance and flavours! The wine on the other hand from brought out the onion flavours so much more! Very yummy combo! Love how they name the wine for this one. Ochota Barrels Texture like the Sun 2016. However I reckon the Bresaola should be eaten first so as not to be overwhelmed by strong onion flavours. 😁

I would to thank The Straits Wine Company for their invite, totally enjoyed myself!

[MEDIA INVITE] Holiday In My Head – Black Box @ Drama Centre, Singapore

Two nights ago I had the privilege to be invited together with some influencer friends to attend the opening night of a local theatre production, Holiday In My Head by Asylum Theatre. I was so looking forward to this play since it was out on Sistic for sales a few months ago.  Thanks Val for arranging and Dean for the tix!

Holiday In My Head is an anthology of nine whimsical holiday-themed short plays by award-winning playwright & director Dean Lundquist.

The unique tales take place in a shared universe populated by kooky Christmas elves, talking silverware, darkly comic circus clowns, a mystic bowl of breakfast cereal and an unusual visit from Santa.

Performed by an international ensemble cast, Holiday in my Head features the award-winning I Can Tell Your Handbag is Fake, Finger Food, and The Joy of Solitude. Also included are audience favorites Coulrophobia (The Fear of Clowns), Holiday with Mr. K, Faith in the Super Bowl, The Naughty List, Holy Toast and the world première of Christmas Bonus. I shall not disclose too much here but this hilarious production is prolly a great breakaway from our daily mundane stressful lifestyle and definitely a cool warm-up as we approach the long awaited Christmas.

This production is performed by very seasoned Chris Bucko, Chio Su-Ping, Paul Lucas, Andrew Mowatt, Amanda Tee and Zee Wong <– she’s hot! 😍😍😍

So go check it out this weekend or next, tickets are still available from today till 13th Dec 2015! The link again here for ticket purchase –> http://sistic.com.sg/events/head1215

Ghost The Musical – MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

Ghost, a movie we are all so familiar with in the year 1990, is now a musical production which started in Manchester since the year 2011. I’ve been following them since and finally they have arrived in Singapore! I was so happy when I managed to get a ticket for myself with discounts given for GV movie members.

It was also my first time at MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands and I must say the service was tip top. Although I couldn’t snap any shots with my camera as I had to surrender at the counter, I must say I was impress with the smooth flow of the crowd by the ushers and friendly services rendered. A place fit to hold such an international production.

Seating was alright but could be a little more comfy if I were to pay for the full price of $125. Aircondition was good for me, so ladies, you know what to bring. Sound system was amazing, every voice projection was apparent and clear.

Now the musical. Apart from idiots talking when the show was on, I don’t think I should go into details if not it’ll spoil everyone’s mood but overall it is a fantastic production, top class actors and actresses, beautiful soundtracks, excellent props and back screen plays. Not so much of magic, but more of optical illusions. I teared badly in the scenes when Molly started singing ‘With You’ in the first half and when Sam got into the body of the hilarious psychic Oda Mae Brown and danced with Molly in the second half. Well that’s all I can say and I’m still in awe with the train scenes, raining scenes, how the props just slides in and out, etc. Love it! Not to mention the sounds used for every detail like Sam trying to grab a cup, getting punched, Sam’s voice with more echo when he’s talking in the mortal world. And the lights, wow, love it when the pale blue light follows Sam around to show that he’s ghost while the warm lights shine normally on the living. Such details gives the show a tighter finish and an overall satisfying experience.

I just love how this musical triggers some strings in everyone’s hearts when at a certain time in your life, you miss that person so so much. Reminds me of an ex of mine, whom we recently made it clear our relationship and not a day goes by I don’t miss her. (I’m seriously tearing while typing this in the bus on my way home from MBS) I love her and never fail to say it everyday to her. Somehow it’s been too long, and I guess things just couldn’t work out anymore. So if you love someone, tell them you love them, but in my case,  she doesn’t appreciate it and I find it pointless to say it anymore. Sigh…

So go watch this musical with someone you love,  or alone like me. If your tears flow, let it flow. Partners it’s best you keep quiet and watch the musical. The best you can do is standby tissue papers, depending on how much water can flow through those eyes.

But hurry now, the show runs till only 15th Nov 2015. You can book tix online at http://goo.gl/UE7YzC. Use promo code ‘GHOSTGV’ to get 25% discount off your tickets! Lemme know if you liked it by commenting below!

[MEDIA PREVIEW] TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil

Before the opening show begins tomorrow on the 28th Oct 2015, I was invited to a media sneak preview with my beloved sista Cathryn. Arrived early and registration was under the hot sun which I thought could be better done under the Ticketing Counter? Hmmm…

Anyways, TOTEM was created in 2010 and their first show was in Montreal, Canada and the 112 crew members from 17 countries (inclusive of 46 performers) have been on tour since! TOTEM traces the fascinating journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly. Somewhere between science and legend, TOTEM is an uplifting array of athleticism, soul-touching theatrics, lavish costume designs and cutting edge digital effects. With acrobatic performances evoking selected scenes from the story of evolution, TOTEM explores the ties that bind Man to other species, his dreams and his infinite potential. The show will be going on for 55 performances all the way to 6th December 2015!

Tickets are available online at http://www.sistic.com.sg/events/totem1215 from $98 to $328 and hope to see you there! Check out the pics below for some highlights which I tried to capture with limited lighting.

Tips:

  1. Do not bring your cameras. No photography allowed. If you wanna sneak a shot from your mobile phone, REMEMBER TO TURN OFF FLASH!!!
  2. No food from outside. There are typical movie snacks and drinks inside which you can purchase.
  3. Bring more cash or a card if you wanna buy some of TOTEM’s souvenirs and t-shirts.
  4. Ladies, please bring a cardigan. You’ll feel cold with the aircon blasting inside. I felt just nice, so it’s too cold for ladies.
  5. The Big Top is located at the other end of Marina Bay Sands, nearer to the financial centre. You may wanna alight nearer there for cabbing and park nearer there if driving. Those taking MRT, turn left after exiting station control, walk straight all the way, turn left and walk straight all the way till you pass Bread Street Kitchen and exit MBS.
  6. Seats are of normal size, so carry light when going there.
  7. If you can’t control your kids from running around or making noise, please don’t bring them as they might distract the performers and your neighbours.
  8. Sit back and enjoy the show!
  9. If my tips are of any good, please ‘Like’ my eatwithroy page (www.fb.com/eatwithroy) and follow me on Instagram @eatwithroy. ;-P

Ultimate Hawker Fest 2014 (22nd Nov 2014) – Suntec City Hall 401 & 402, Singapore

Hey y’all!!

Just to share with guys on an upcoming event which is curated by my fellow food blogging friends SGfootonfoot, Misstamchiak and thesilverchef, Ultimate Hawker Fest 2014 happening this week at Suntec City Halls 401 & 402! This is the 3rd year Touch Community Services is holding this event with a unique focus on celebrating Singapore’s Hawker Heritage, as part of Singapore’s Jubilee (SG50) celebrations. There will be more than 20 chefs to create the Ultimate menu and all profits will go to 32,000 beneficiaries under Touch Community Service, regardless of race and religion.

WHAT CAN ONE EXPECT

  • The event honours the heritage of pioneer generation hawkers through stalls helmed by chefs from the second, third and fourth generations of pioneers. Example includes Rong Cheng Bak Kut Teh and Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionery with long heritage and is being passed to second and third generation respectively. In addition, Crocodile King by Tony Tee is making a comeback, offering nutritious crocodile soup only available for the festival.
  • Once again showcase traditional fare made with the finest ingredients to create ‘ultimate’ versions of the original dish. Example include Elongated Glutinous Rice with Abalone by Geng Shu Mei Shi Shi Jia, 100 days corn fed Anxin Chicken Rice and Foie Gras Rojak by Onaka.
  • A new generation of young budding chefs like Douglas Ng of Fishball Story, Gerald and Julyn of Penang Kia, and Wee and Adrian of Old Bibik Beef Rendang will also be present at the festival. They have been driven by their passion for food to leave jobs in other sectors to join the culinary industry.
  • Celebrity chefs Eric Neo (from Intercontinental Hotel), Tan Yong Hua (Restaurant HOME), Melvin Lim (Ramada and Days Hotels Singapore) and Shen Tan will be cooking local dishes such as Otah, Roast Duck, Nasi Lemak etc.

So if you are free this coming Saturday, 22 November 2014, come check out the amazing dishes with me and support this charity event! Check out the event details below:

The annual major food fair in Singapore is here and I have to be there to check it out. Seriously a lot of people and a lot of good bargains. As compared to the other food fairs in Singapore, this one does not mix with other non-food related suppliers…. just FOOD. Check out the pics below:

Big Roy Visits Food & Hotel Asia 2014

This is one of the largest scale food and hotel exhibition in Singapore and if I remember correctly, there were 10 halls of exhibits at the Singapore Expo. As usual, going to the Singapore Expo for such a big event, best is to take the train. I went with a friend in a car and we waited for more than 2 hours to get into the car park! And getting a parking lot is the next challenge! Reminder to myself, TRAIN ONLY NEXT YEAR!

Well apart from checking out what was available in food supplies in the industry, I was more drawn to meeting the 2013 World Barista Champion, Pete Licata. Saw his entire competition on YouTube and was inspired by the way he presented and his knowledge and passion for coffee. Pete was there as a spokesperson for Nuova Simonelli espresso machines, who are the official main sponsor for WBC events. Pete is a very cordial guy, obliging to photo taking, and is really calm with so many people surrounding him. I really wonder if the people there actually know who he is or  were they there just for the free latte? Anyways, I’m a big fan and am glad I got a picture with him and he made me a latte! 🙂

Latte by Pete Licata
Latte by Pete Licata. Simple latte art is alright, most importantly is the extraction of the espresso. Most folks here are suckers for latte art. Good latte art doesn’t mean the coffee is good!

After the lovely meeting with Pete, I went on to check out the rest of the fair. To be honest, very large scale but most of the foods that we asted don’t taste that natural. Could be to keeping costs low hence lots of preservatives are used in the production? I really dunno, maybe next year I can see some good suppliers? Anyways, some pics for you guys to salivate to. 🙂
